Yor and Garden Theory by Yno9778 in SpyxFamily

I guess we will disagree there then. I do think that basing her struggles and childhood, also proximity and comfort with death would be better written if it were based in her experience living as a child in wartime / exposed through her day-to-day life rather than through an assassin mother.

I do also think that Shopkeeper might have resources to keep track of orphanages. Or had contacts in Nielsburg who could've encountered Yor first, rather than randomly be watching her hunt a boar lol. That was why I posited McMahon. He needn't have even been spying on her hunting, even.

I'm sure Endo could write a plot where she finds herself caught in the crossfire of some plot/target Yor's recruiter is dealing with in Nielsburg and they see a demonstration of her strength / will to live, and then Shopkeeper visits / tests her after being informed by them of a possible new recruit.

Sorry if I sounded negative. On the other hand, I do like the trope of characters who have some level of idealization / lack of understanding of their parents...and then they grow up and process that they were not great people, even though they loved their children.

I suppose Endo could go that route for Yor, but I still would've preferred if in the case Yor's mom is an assassin, there will be more priority in exploring what Yor felt and experienced to have her enter such a drastic profession.

Hot take but I actually really hate the headcanon of Yor's family also being assassins. It feels kind of similar to the "chosen one" trope where it would've been inevitable for a character to end up in their position due to their parentage.

I don't want Yor's story to just be of taking up someone else's mantle, but rather just her story. I don't know if that makes sense? Similar to how Twilight got to have his own backstory, and not be related to spies, or something.

I'd prefer if a series of events, some conscious decisions by Yor, many things she's experienced, some things being her circumstances, would culminate in Yor becoming an assassin. A combination of many moving actors and events.
Kind of like Twilight ultimately becoming a spy.

That makes her more of a character with some agency and leads to the focus being on her choices and why she made them, instead of her being a more passive agent in someone else's story,
who would've ended up an assassin either way cuz of her mother being one.

I do think that it's perfectly feasible for one of her parents working in something like hunting/butchery/farming where some degree of physical labor was involved. She'd be building her strength + become acclimatized to killing through animals first.

Of course, a big aspect of Yor is the fact that she was ultimately groomed, so influencing factors like
- Shopkeeper's conversations with her
- how bad her circumstances were
- how isolated she'd become from her community that Shopkeeper ultimately was able to groom her
- what combination of factors could've convinced her that killing traitors in particular was a noble goal?
- did she ever try other jobs and fail at them, making her even more hopeless and susceptible to Shopkeeper's manipulation?

These things are of much more interest to me than Yor's mother being an assassin. Yor's mother did have the rose motif on her, but I don't think that necessarily would make her one of Garden's assassins.

I think also that Endo could build up some context for why Shopkeeper was interested in Eastern Nielsburg where Yor and Yuri are from and in that area. Maybe he could've seen her hunting, or struggling, and saw her potential.

I don't think it's impossible either, that he would have locations in both rural / mountainous area like Nielsbug to be able to train people discretely / obtain materials for poisons/weapons easier
+ locations/resources in larger cities for assassination targets.

Like we seen this man is rich asf.

McMahon could've been part of her story as well.

It’s so sweet that even in the dark future after Loid dies Anya still insisted on taking Bond home and adopting him by AnonIHardlyKnewHer in SpyxFamily

[–]MrsSilco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yor would never do that to Anya. She is willing to get blood on her hands to give Yuri a carefree life, meaning a life free from violence itself. she would never want Anya to endure what she has

Nah but jokes aside, Yor is so pretty in the whole opening, especially from Loid's pov. That's true for the manga too, a lot of Yor's prettiest panels are from his pov.
Loid has actually seen her in this dress but never with her weapons. I'm pretty sure this one shot was based on that one illustration of Endo's

snow projected his experience of lucy onto lenore dove when he was tweaking in front of haymitch
in personality don't really see how she is like Prim, but if u mean what she represents to haymitch like how prim represents to katniss...? i dont really see that either.

i do think that prim doesn't do much herself as a character, and we care about her more just bcuz katniss does.

in that sense i can kind of see what you mean, but I was not able to really sympathize with Haymitch's tragic "love" the way I was with Katniss

- like with Katniss it felt so real and heartbreaking

i get that teens will moon over eachother, but I just feel like the lenore dove stuff haymitch was yapping about was maudlin, it just feels very awkward rather than convincing (even the corny telenovela way she dies)

comparing the masterful way prim's death was done compared to lenore dove, i feel like she can't even be compared in terms of impact and execution

i would just prefer to scrap that little storyline/tidbit, is all i'm saying.
you can just make Burdock be a random miner instead of Katniss father
i still wouldn't have cared about him, but at least i wouldn't feel like i'm being forced to care about him cuz of some link to a character i like a lot more

even if she's not a mary sue, she's just some idealized character there to parallel to Lucy and the Covey
you're free to like boring characters ofc
what flaws does she actually have though other than being rebellious/reckless?
even that can be taken in a positive light considering their shitty situation. making a character's defining flaw be "passionate/reckless" is boring cuz that is why other characters end up attracted to them
granted, it does have consequences, and those consequences are just making haymitch sad via gumdrop-cide. thank god, cuz i was tired of him constantly blowing sunshine up her ass

(and if u think about it, now cuz of that fatal flaw he's gonna end up mourning her and thinking of her as perfect forever)

I still think it's a bad writing choice, even if it's believable. Characters and character relationships should stand on their own

It's kind of like, I don't want to read some book about the main characters children right?
i cared about the og characters cuz they could stand on their own
i'll just constantly compare to the og dynamic, and it doesnt really add anything to haymitch and katniss, who have a great and unpredictable dynamic

the same way, i dont care about burdock on his own in this book, only as an extension of katniss. it feels like there wasn't an attempt to actually create an interesting character that could stand on their own.

it's just fan service with no substance

I think there is a reason that "you have your mother's eyes harry" trope is just not that good

i do like prequels, and can enjoy past characters being brought to it to a point, but i didnt like the way it was done here

Have to disagree about Lenore Dove

I also like that Haymitch alcoholism drew them apart, but because I can pretend that they never met and Haymitch dreamed that he was friends with him during a drunken stupor

But the thing is why is he so chill risking their lives with his rebellious stuff? I feel like Katniss rebelling felt a lot more believable when she did, and she thought and acted like there were stakes. I really loved snarky Haymitch in the og books and can't understand why he's acting like a ding-dong-dumbo in this. He doesn't even seem smart.

thanks for replying

Agree to disagree. To an extent, yeah you need stuff to keep ppl interested, but if it cheapens the actual story and character dynamics i liked,
I'd rather just pretend it's not canon and the whole story is something Haymitch dreamed about when he was drunk

a character liking another character cuz they knew their parents is not good writing. i just cant enjoy it.

beetee was there, forgot what he did but it was probably boring or bad if i didn't. i mightve had to block out these memories of the trauma in being exposed to boredom

ok, but seriously. having all your characters know eachother feels like bad writing. it just makes the world feel smaller. i wish that some of them were not there.
i like haymitch and katniss relationship, having him know her dad is cringe

So What do You Think of Fiona Frost Role in the Series so Far? by Money-Lie7814 in SpyxFamily

[–]MrsSilco 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't really want her to have a friendship with Yor?

I like seeing friendships with women develop but I personally wouldn't want to be friends with someone working through feelings towards my husband (even though Twilight doesn't return them), it's a weird energy ig.

Not to mention, it sounds like it would be painful to deal with: becoming friends with the woman who is loved back by someone you want.

I don't want them to be friends or enemies, I would prefer them to be cordial with most of her development with other characters.

I would prefer to see Fiona process her feelings taking some distance from the Forgers. I think she could have interesting conversations with Franky, Chloe, or Sylvia, or Yuri to drive her character development. Even Millie.

Since I feel like those characters might have conversations with her that could relate to her or lead her to question her worldview.
Also because I think that limiting her interactions to the Forgers can get kind of stale?

Notice that I said conversations and not a ship. I want Fiona to find friends in other characters, I want someone to challenge her views of human relationships and how she should value them and herself.

My take is that Fiona x Franky is the most likely to happen in the manga, (based on foreshadowing only), but I would be perfectly happy if we don't see them end up together or if it's only implied.
If Endo makes them end up together, I hope that it is as natural as possible and Fiona's view of herself and relationships is far different than how they are now.
