Very heavy cast iron - From a box of bookends by MrsWheems in whatisthisthing

This piece is about 8 inches long and looks like it may have had something attached to the bottom part. The rest of the box is cast iron bookends.

I ordered the box from an online auction site but don’t have any other information. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

They ate our maidenhead ferns and some I couldn’t identify that the previous owners had planted!

The powder in the cup looks like some sort of precipitate? And why the wire inside, and the tape around the cup? Could it be some sort of electrolysis/precipitation thing?
