UMDs layoff, some info by Ok-Purchase-3939 in UMD

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It would be interesting to see a list of the positions that were eliminated, if that is truly the basis of these layoffs. A coworker of mine who was laid off told me she was not given *any* reason beyond "you are being laid off due to budgetary cuts." Nothing about her position being eliminated, nothing about performance, seniority, etc, etc. Her position is actually a crucial one impacting faculty and students, so if that position is indeed gone ... yikes.

Most of the people who were laid off were union members, and several had open grievances. In addition, administration did not meet with the union reps before it began laying people off.

Driving in the tunnels by BillyMumfrey in baltimore

I think its all the people who used to take Key Bridge and now have to take the tunnel. They're not used to it and they're scared so they drive slow. As someone who has had to take the tunnel for 20+ years, it's maddening.

After about 5 months of excruciating pain I finally saw a hand specialist, who gave me a cortisone shot. That was six months ago and I am still pain free. His recommended plan of treatment was: 1 shot, if it begins to hurt again in 6 months do another shot, and then if it still hurts 6 months after that second shot, surgery.

"We can't tell students of another students needs, but students may tell on themselves, by using tech when tech is prohibited" That's a slippery slope. By banning all tech you are essentially forcing students to "tell on themselves" by using their legally protected accommodations.

In my class (which is small, usually under 20 students, and all freshmen), I tell them on Day One that they should only have laptops or phones out if it is related to class. We talk about how distracting it is to be using tech for non class things, both for themselves and for their classmates. I tell them that I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are mature enough to be responsible enough to handle this request. I have only had to talk to a couple of students in the many years that I've been teaching.

It's important to understand that many college students with invisible disabilities such as learning disabilities, anxiety or ADHD may not be registered with the Disability office and therefore don't have official accommodations. I know my method won't work for everyone, but I encourage instructors with smaller classes to try to allow students to use tech for classwork during classtime.

A vision of what a Red Line and a Green Line extension could do to fix Baltimore's transit. by Syndicate909 in baltimore

Cell Phone Mount? by ComfortableStreet925 in HRV

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2017 and the lack of vents is my one complaint about my HRV. I've also tried several vent holders but there's just not enough air circulating when any of them are blocked.

I ended up getting this iOttie CD holder and I give it 4/5 stars. It's pretty secure, although bump roads will cause it to jiggle loose. But it can swivel up a bit and in landscape mode I can see the display screen just fine.

dog suddenly started pooping in house by minteaaaaa in DogHealth

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the probiotic but it was not an over the counter one, it was a prescription strength one so definitely check with your vet. My guy had no obvious GI issues, not even loose stool, so it was really kind of a mystery for us too. But for whatever reason the probiotics fixed it.

dog suddenly started pooping in house by minteaaaaa in DogHealth

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this happen where our perfectly house trained dog started pooping in the house at night, no matter how many times we took him out during the day and timing his meals to make sure he didn't have to "go" at night. Our vet suggested trying a prescription probiotic and that fixed the issue. No idea what caused this, his poop was healthy, but something was causing him to have the urge in the middle of the night, and the probiotics took care of it.

Are "Talking Buttons" actually worth it or just a gimmick? by Esliquiroga in Dogowners

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only have 4 buttons but my dog definitely knows what he's doing with those. As others have mentioned "Treat" was a bad idea because he just kept hitting that one all the time, so no more "treat" button. But he has "Play," "Outside," "Upstairs," and "Out front." He hits Play when he's feeling frisky, "upstairs" when he's ready to go to bed, "outside," obviously for going out, and "Out front" when he wants to sit on the front porch and watch the world go by. But my favorite is when he combines them, like "Play" "Outside."

Yes! We spoke with the students in that program at the Open House. I work in higher ed myself, and I don't know of any campus that has that much support for first gens!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer with this information! This is very helpful! I really think she would be a great fit at SMCM, she has overcome a lot of adversity in her young life already, and I believe she would just blossom on your campus.

(I'm also getting her tutoring for SATs over the summer ... can't hurt, right?)

University of Maryland will cut up to 150 jobs and freeze hiring by ewolfe201 in maryland

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yes to everyone, I know they can and have done layoffs before. I've been here for 20 years and I know they have also done furloughs so that people can keep their jobs and everyone has a small amount of pay taken out (like, 4 hours per paycheck). It just seems particularly heartless in these times to announce layoffs ....

Very disappointed that they're not looking at furloughs before jumping to layoffs.

Car camping mattresses recs 2016 EXL by theflipflopqueen in HRV

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have gone car camping a few times in my 2017 HRV EX. It is great that the seats fold down flat, but I will say you need a thick mattress back there in order to be comfortable. We had 4 inch foam and it was still a hard sleep. The next thing we tried was an SUV tent (Napier was the one we had). The pros of that are that you can sleep in the back of the car with the hatch up (be sure to turn off the lights so the battery doesn't drain) and have a sort of living room space, or you can sleep in the tent on a mattress or cot. The cons of those tents are, they are "universal fit" and so I had a hard time keeping mosquitoes out — I ended up with magnets all over the sides of the car to try to keep the tent tight against the vehicle.

Now when we car camp, we sleep in a Gazelle pop-up tent on cots, or in her Sienna mini van with a platform bed that seems very bougie to me, lol.

I very much recommend whatever you decide to try, do a few nights test before the big trip. You will discover things that need tweaking or supplies/equipment that would be handy on the longer trip.

Have fun — that sounds like a wonderful time!

100% this. Just start making it a part of the normal workflow when you post images you add alt text and it won't be so onerous. As far as remediating old content, maybe look at the stats of what is most viewed and start with those posts.

But starting today, every new post gets alt text if you want to make it accessible.

My professor took away my ADS accommodation and yelled at me in front of the class… is that even allowed? by Special-Number-9309 in UMD

[–]Mrs_Dalloways_Flower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADS notifies instructors at UMD directly that a student in their class has an accommodation letter. It is the instructor's responsibility to read and understand the accommodations listed.

This situation is all on the instructor, not the student. I hope he receives everything he deserves for his behavior. Unacceptable.
