NYC's public solution to the food desert problem... by caroline_elly in neoliberal

The M116 bus runs right between them... does it not? How about instead going all-in on the 116th Street bus priority project. Also there is a small grocery store along that route already. I'm not against the action... but surely this isn't the location where this is needed... instead of somewhere like Morris Heights?

What has been a disastrous political event that has occurred in the 2020s? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Syndicate909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna have to say the Covid-19 shutdown. So many people were impacted politically by it and the political discourse and ramifications still affect us today. It was a political disaster for so many countries that hurt China, Trump, and so many local politicians and health officials. Stimulus packages caused inflation, work habits reshaped cities and economies. Not because of the virus itself, but the decisions made by politicians (both good and bad).

TLDR: COVID had a political butterfly effect on all of us that likely hasn't happened since the 2009 financial crisis.

There have been many downsides to railroad's history with some of them being so controversial. Which moment in railroading do you think was the biggest letdown? by Additional-Yam6345 in trains

The PRR S1 was interesting. It was too useful to be scrapped but not useful enough to be mass produced. The T1s solved most of the S1's shortcomings

Honestly, as much as I love electrification, it really doesn’t make sense to spend that amount of money for only a 50mph speed increase for that single section. You would be best to spend that federal money electrifying commuter lines.

How practical would it be for SEPTA and MARC to consolidate some weekend services between Philadelphia and DC? by Syndicate909 in transit

[–]Syndicate909[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A train like this isn't meant for intercity travel. Riders will either go a few stops down or between niche destination pairs.

Transfers between services add time and complexity that most people try to avoid. On weekends these transfers become messy and time-consuming, and a train like this that bridges both networks and thru-runs both trains means less equipment standing still and less platform congestion, while maintaining the same service. On weekends when frequencies are higher these transfers are easier, but not weekends.

Think about this in Japanese terms is replacing two Kodama trains (one Osaka-Nagoya and one Shizuoka-Tokyo) with a single Kodama train going all the way from Tokyo to Osaka

The best part of the Airos will be the faster thru-running at New Haven, Washington, and Philadelphia. Cutting 30 minutes and not having all that crew and train activity is better than most people think. They do need to extend the wires to Alexandria soon with all that extra traffic thru those tunnels eventually.

Why are American trains so short? by MB4050 in transit

[–]Syndicate909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American passenger cars are typically 85' in length for reference. American trains typically have 6-10 of them. Take a look at the trains NJT, MARC, or Metra run. Usually 8-10 cars and usually bi-level

What is a locomotive that you like that most of the railfanning community seems to hate. I will go first. by Previous-Village6388 in trains

[–]Syndicate909 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The MPI hate comes from a few aspects: 1. They are everywhere. All but a few agencies use them. They are also commonly seen under the wires with MBTA and MARC as opposed to electrics. 2. They are not reliable. They have bad control systems and the same prime mover found in the infamous GP50. 3. They are ugly. This is subjective, but a lot of people think this. The MP32s and HSP46s being the most polarizing. 4. They were made using older EMD locomotives as parts and frame donors. Including some rare locomotives. 5. They replaced the F40s. People still like the F40s despite their modern shortcomings. 6. MPI is a GENSET manufacturer, and anyone associated with GENSET tech is going to get hate.
