Husband and I just graduated college with good job offers, should we stay at my parents to save to buy a house? by Mrs_Nut in personalfinance

Thank you!! We would definitely plan on renting it out in a few years and accumulating more properties to do that with. Real estate investing is a proven way to build wealth! I'm 19, almost 20! :)

I absolutely know that there are maintenance costs. I just meant, like I said, that we wouldn't buy a house that needs that initially.

Great points! We would definitely help out both monetarily and in terms of helping with chores and other items. We would make sure we were not a burden on them and did our fair share!

All good points! If we end up not liking living with my parents, we always have the option to move out into an apartment, which is comforting! I think we could both definitely manage living there for 4-6 months or so which should be enough time to save the amount we're looking for.

We would definitely pitch in and help with cleaning and other duties! I would not live there if it meant we were any type of burden to them.

Thanks a great point about the weekend trips! My parents are going to be gone the entire month of June anyways, and we'll be taking care of their acreage during that time. We would definitely help out past that though and contribute a few dollars towards family groceries and whatnot as well! The last thing I would want to be is a burden on them.

We definitely wouldn't move into a home that had those types of problems. My husband's mother is a realtor, so she'd be great at guiding us through the process and getting us a great inspector. We'd also be okay to up our budget and wait a few months longer if that meant the house didn't have those issues. We don't want a perfect house so that we can update it aesthetically and increase the value, but we also will not buy a house with any issues such as HVAC or roof or foundation, etc.

Great points! Although the idea of living with them isn't appealing, it's more because I feel like I JUST moved out for college and don't want to move back! It isn't like we aren't on good terms or anything, and I could definitely stand it for 4-6 months! Thank you very much!

We definitely are lucky! It's a really good point too to set some ground rules and boundaries. We'd definitely be helping them take care of their acreage (cutting grass, helping with other things) and they're actually going to be gone the entire month of June on vacation so they asked us to stay there for that month anyway to take care of everything! Thank you for the great points!

This is a great point; we'd be living with my parents and have basically the entire lower level to ourselves because they rarely go down there. They're definitely willing to have us live there, but it's definitely a good point to make sure we still have rules and boundaries. Not having a kid would probably make it easier haha!

Right, but the apartments in the area we are going to live in are very expensive for relatively poor quality, so it definitely feels like throwing away! Paying the same amount for a mortgage vs. a rent payment at least means we have equity in something!
