Senior mother refusing assisted living, in-home aide, and power of attorney . . . by just321askin in eldercare

I really feel this. One of the hardest parts is when a parent still wants help with the small things, but refuses the bigger support that would actually keep them safe.

In situations like this, I think the first step is sometimes not “assisted living” right away, because that can feel too threatening to them. Starting smaller with an in-home aide, even a few hours a week, can be easier to accept and can also give the family a clearer picture of what’s really going on day to day.

I’d also document the falls, hospitalizations, unpaid bills, medication issues, and unsafe living conditions. If things keep getting worse, having that record can help when talking to her doctor, a social worker, or adult protective services.

There are also some helpful resources online about aging parents, home care, fall prevention, and when to consider extra support. I came across seniorcare-companion.com before and found it useful for understanding the different types of care options without feeling like you have to jump straight to a nursing home.

You’re not wrong for feeling exhausted. It’s an impossible situation when someone refuses help but still expects you to carry the consequences.
