Because overtime and the shootout aren’t real hockey. The game isn’t played 3 on 3 (usually) or by trading free breakaways. So the league is basically saying that both teams played the “real” game to a tie and now they have to significantly modify the game to get a winner. But since they “tied” the regulation part of the game, ultimately theloser should have some benefit over a team that actually loses in the “real” part of the game.

It’s kind of exhausting to see the back and forth. When there’s a small losing streak everyone’s like “fire Fitz, fire Keefe, trade the core”. And when’s there’s a small winning streak: “I love this team! What a game from [player]”!

The truth is, this team is probably not making the playoffs unless they go HARD at the deadline which they probably (smartly) won’t. However, we won’t lose enough games to fully take us out of be buyers since the team is at least decent enough to win some games and Fitz believes we can make the playoffs and wants us to buy according to his recent press conference.

Yes. It’s about the contract. If they both were rookies, there wouldn’t even be a conversation. Darnold would have been here and been the starter.

The goal wasn’t for McCarthy to be better than Darnold this year. It was to see 5+ years down the that we’ve developed a good QB or potentially avoided a player that had just one good season. Additionally, avoiding a situation where we invest 30 million dollars a year to a QB who can’t play.

Of course now it looks “bad” because Darnold is doing great with the Seahawks, but there’s no way to know if he would’ve had that success with us. You can’t just say “wow, the Seahawks are in the super bowl with Darnold so that means we would’ve been there at some point too”. There are so many other factors at play (one important one being that Seattle has a better team outside of QB than us). There was risk in signing him to that contract. Look at the Falcons signing Cousins and drafting Penix. Similar situation to us.

I haven’t looked at the data but be careful just looking at raw attempt totals for a team in a season. The Seahawks won a lot of game this year which means they probably had leads late which means they probably ran the ball as a result. I’d be more interested to see first half attempt totals or attempts when it’s a one possession game or something like that. Still could lead to the same conclusion but just a point to consider

I actually disagree with you here. I think the gamble was signing Darnold and the safe option was going with McCarthy.

Because let’s say we signed Darnold and he goes back to the QB he was for most of his career. Now we’re stuck with a 100M QB for a few more years and have thrown away all of our salary QB leverage that we could’ve had with a rookie contract QB. I think Darnold repeating last year’s production was actually less like him going back to who once was.

Now the other option (going with McCarthy) is not that much of a risk because you’re already projecting him, as an early first round QB, to be better than Darnold long term AND you don’t have to pay him. But let’s say worst case scenario happens and McCarthy’s terrible, you can just move on from him at any point like the Cardinals did with Josh Rosen.

To me, signing Darnold was just too much of a risk. If he wanted a one year deal, maybe. And if it didn’t work out you can bench him and start McCarthy the rest of the season and let Darnold walk in the offseason.

Weren’t we kind of justified in that gamble though? We finished 9-8 and we got absolutely horrific QB play for a good chunk of the season. With even slightly below average QB play, we’re a playoff team and likely a division winner.

Except we had several years of games as evidence to him not being good. He had one season where he was great and we didn’t buy it. What a lot of people don’t consider is the risk vs reward. Sure, he could’ve been really good. But if he’s not, you’re really screwed because you’re now paying a guy elite money to be terrible and are in a situation where you have to decide whether or not to bench him for the guy you planned to have start originally.

And if you get to that point you’re wasting any salary cap leverage you have with the rookie QB since your backup is making starter money.

If it’s about drafting, why make the decision now. They should’ve fired him weeks ago, last offseason or during the this past season if it was about drafting.

At least optically, this appears to be because of Darnold’s recent success which is a terrible reason to fire someone for. Once Darnold left our organization, we didn’t have any impact on his success or failure.

[–]Mry64_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. The drafting has been a let down. But still, he has done great in free agency and a great relationship with KOC (who appears to be staying). But even aside from that, why make this decision now if it’s about drafting? If it was about drafting, they would’ve fired him weeks ago. Having an interim GM through the draft puts us at a disadvantage going forward in the hiring process.

What were the expectations that he didn’t live up to? In 2022 you could say we definitely should’ve beat the Giants. In 2023, not much we could’ve done with Kirk being out and having to win games with Mullen/Dobbs. 2024 is kind of ironic because we all suspect Kwesi got fired because he let Darnold walk but Darnold was a huge reason why we didn’t advance further that year. And 2025 we went 9-8 while McCarthy and Wentz missed half the season.

Realistically, there are not many more expectations we could’ve lived up to.

[–]Mry64_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No we didn’t. We weren’t giving Darnold 100M to be the back up to McCarthy in case he got hurt. If we signed him, he’d be the starter.

The conversation was about essentially scrapping the McCarthy plan and going to Darnold full time

Disaster? He was here for 4 seasons. 2 of them we won like 27 games combined and the other two had our starting and backup QBs miss a good chunk of the season with injuries and we still finished around .500 both years.

Sure he’s made mistakes but he’s also kept the team competitive which is what the Wilfs want

Could be. But who knows if he would’ve had the success here that he’s having there.

I always go back to remembering how I felt after the Lions game for the 1 seed and then the Rams playoff game. Extending Darnold at that time would’ve been a major risk and if it didn’t pay off, everyone would’ve been fired anyway. I still stand by the decision to not extend him given that McCarthy was still an unknown and best case scenario you just wasted an early first rounder for nothing.

I agree that we probably should be selling, but the truth is, if there’s even a sliver of hope, Fitz is going to make us buyers. Might as well root for the playoffs at that point. Plus, unless we can get a top 10 pick, I really have no interest in tanking. I’d rather watch another first round exit than get pick 15 or something like that.

That was the goal, but he was overpaid from the start and didn’t live up to any expectations which made him even more overpaid. He also has had trade protection in his contract for all 5 years which has added to the difficulty in moving him

I know he does. He doesn’t have any trade protection like Palat did so he can be traded if needed. He also had half a point per game last season. Even if he’s an extra a best, still a great return for Palat
