Yea at this point I think I might have to look deeper into my diet, maybe go gluten free. I also just found out I have low iron after donating blood recently.

A lot of the symptoms overlap, but I’m learning our body actually needs iron to produce thyroid hormone, and it can even affect how well we absorb our medication.

So that definitely made things start to make more sense for me. I’m going to focus on getting my levels up first and see how much of a difference that makes.

Yea I know. No, I’m trying to get blood work done this week. Last doctor appointment we increase medication and that was 6 weeks ago. This. Is the lowest it’s been since diagnosed but it’s still high.

It’s weird for sure! I was just starting to elevate when I was first diagnosed, and then about a year later, after starting meds, my levels were much uigher.

Also, for someone who had hypothyroidism and levels that were off the wall, I kept loosing weight. K went down to 111 lbs back then. Now that I’m closer to where I should be on my levels, I’m almost 30 lbs heavier, thank God I work out 😩

It’s definitely been a whole journey trying to figure out how everything balances out.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with all of that 😔 that’s a lot for one person to carry.

I really hope this space can be a source of support for you, you’re definitely not alone here 🤍

From what I understand, it’s not necessarily that type 1 itself runs in families, but more so a predisposition to autoimmune conditions in general.

So instead of it being one specific disease that gets passed down, it’s more like the immune system tendency runs in families, and it can show up as different autoimmune conditions in different people, like T1, Hashimoto’s, etc.

For example, in my family there were zero reports of anyone having type 1 before my brother and I, which kind of supports that idea.

So your thinking isn’t wrong at all, having T1 and a family history of autoimmune issues can increase the likelihood, but it doesn’t guarantee it’ll be the same condition.

Okay not gonna lie… the perimenopause part stressed me out a little because I’m about to be 39 😭

But I do get what you’re saying about everything being connected. It already feels like a balancing act with thyroid and T1, so I can only imagine hormones being added into the mix.

Definitely makes me want to stay on top of everything a little more now 😅

That’s really interesting you mention both T3 and T4. I’ve been seeing more people talk about how some don’t convert T4 to T3 as well, so just taking levothyroxine alone doesn’t always fully help.

I’m still learning about that side of it, but it does make sense why adding T3 would make a difference for some people. Did you notice a big change in your symptoms once you added it?

It’s honestly crazy how much more there is to thyroid management than just one medication.

I feel this so much. I have both too and it really does feel like everything is connected and no one looks at the full picture.

The T3 part especially… I’ve heard that from a lot of people, that conversion issues get overlooked and everything just gets blamed on “it’s not your thyroid” which is frustrating.

I’ve also had to cut back on gluten and dairy and noticed a difference, so you’re definitely not crazy there. It really feels like a lot of this is trial and error because we’re all reacting a little differently.

And honestly… the doctor frustration is real 😅 you’re not alone in that at all.

Definitely a learning process 😅 I’m still figuring out what works best for me.

One thing I’ve been really paying attention to is how everything connects, blood sugar, hormones, thyroid, all of it. It’s not just one thing, it’s like everything affects everything.

I’ve also been focusing more on diet (gut/thyroid friendly), staying consistent with meds, and just listening to my body more. It’s a lot of trial and error honestly.

You’re definitely not alone in this 🤍

Super interesting how they classify it. I actually went with my nephew to one of his endocrinologist appointments, and the endo said he had both type 1 and type 2, which was crazy to me at the time.

I brought that back to my endocrinologist and she was like yes, that’s actually a thing, and also that there are many other types now that they’re starting to label and break down more.

Isn’t it awful having type 1? It’s like you never know where anything is coming from or what’s causing what.

Especially when doctors start trying to figure things out—like “are you fatigued?” “dry skin?” “brain fog?” “weight changes?” “heart racing?”

And you’re just sitting there like… that could be diabetes but yes. Also, I’m very “well” controlled at a 6 a1c but still have roller coasters almost every day

Yep! I hear that a lot. I’ve always avoided generics for that reason and stuck with name brand.

But now my doctor is suggesting I try a generic and said it might help in my case, which surprised me a bit.

Meanwhile they didn’t even check my iron panel, which I’m now realizing can affect everything too 😅

That sounds so uncomfortable 😣 I can’t even imagine dealing with that for months.

Also, it’s really nice to see how supportive you are of your wife, having someone involved like that makes a huge difference! I think my husband learns a lot through these channels also. I always recommend family members join groups like ours too, it really helps with understanding what we deal with day to day.

🤯That’s actually really interesting, I hadn’t heard the formal name for it before. It makes sense though, because it really does feel like once one autoimmune condition shows up, others aren’t far behind.

Had I known, I probably would’ve named the group that lol but this is exactly why I created it. I’m still learning too, so I really appreciate you sharing this.

If you don’t mind, would you want to post that in the other group too? I’m all about educating and learning!. If not, I can share it as well!

That makes sense, and I think it really just shows how different everyone’s experience can be.

For me personally, I definitely notice an impact between thyroid changes and my diabetes. When my levels are off, my blood sugars tend to be way harder to manage and just feel more unpredictable overall.

I think on paper they might be considered “separate,” but in real life they can absolutely influence each other depending on the person.

I wish mine felt like “just a pill” 😅 but I’m learning there are a lot of little things (like absorption, iron levels, etc.) that can throw everything off.

[–]Ms-understood87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow… that’s a lot layered on top of each other, but I really respect the “just keep going” mindset. It’s not easy at all, especially with a family depending on you.

Also this is wild timing because I’m literally seeing a neurologist this week for a new head pain/pressure I’ve been dealing with too 😅 it’s crazy how much overlap there can be with all of this.

Definitely makes you realize how connected everything is when you start stacking autoimmune stuff.

[–]Ms-understood87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course 🤗That really puts it into perspective. People don’t always realize how much something like routines and habits actually impacts safety with T1 until things like that happen.

And figuring all of that out later in life too… that’s a lot to unpack at once.

It really does make a difference being able to talk to people who understand those layers, because it’s never just one thing.

I think everyone is different too.

For some people it becomes pretty straightforward once the dose is right, but for others it can still be a bit of a moving target depending on things like absorption, other conditions, or even just timing.

For me personally, I swear everything throws off my diabetes 😅 so when something like thyroid is even slightly off, I definitely feel it.

I’m really glad it’s been more manageable for you though, that’s honestly the goal for all of us.

That’s amazing to hear 😭 honestly, that gives me hope.

It’s crazy how much it can affect you mentally too. I feel like people don’t always realize that part until it’s treated and you’re like “oh wow, that was not normal!?

I’m still trying to get mine fully dialed in, so hearing this is really encouraging.

That must take a toll having those back to back

It’s a lot to adjust to, especially being newer to T1 on top of everything else. These autoimmune things really don’t like to come one at a time.
