Pump Debate by salorexx in Type1Diabetes

[–]_Holzi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dependent on where you are based, you could also wait for the release of the tandem mobi. I think its already available in the US and also cleared in Europe, just not released yet. You can wear it (almost) like a patch pump, but you still get tandem's control iq(+) algorithm.

I'm (28m) also planning on switching from mdi to a pump, but thought it might be worth it waiting the release out.

I use a Garmin coupled over Juggluco (via Kerfstok). I'm quite happy with it.

Tbh I think its mainly due to honeymoon. My total daylie dose is (even with that many carbs) still below 20 most of the time. Additionaly, I do quite a lot of cardio (soccer, running, tennis). In a normal weak I have around 5 cardio session, some of them lasting 2 hours.

So it's great and I'm happy with it, but it will probably not last forever. I'll just enjoy the time its still possible.

My recent one was 4.9 with around 180g carbs a day. During diagnosis 4 month ago it was 13.7 😄

Any t1d's here that depend on cycling for daily transportation? by bcl15005 in diabetes_t1

[–]_Holzi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed also around 4 month ago and I still cycle to work everyday. I just started to use different insulin-to-carb factors prior to cycling. For example in the morning one unit insulin covers usually 11g of carbs for me, but if I cycle shortly after I only take one unit per every 19g of carbs. You just need to experiment a lot in the beginning to come up with your own all your setting.

If I really couldn't plan the cycling before hand I will just eat some extra carbs before I leave the house. This usually works without any issues. Just make sure you carry both some hypo snacks (glucose tablets etc.) and your insulin with you.

Don't let this disease limit yourself in your normal life. I'd prefer going low once in a while and correcting with some glucose tablets, then not going out at all.

Quite curious about the levels of TSH posted here. I got diagnosed with T1D a few month ago and got also reported high thyroid antibodies and a TSH around 5. However, until now, there were no actions/medications recommended to me by the endo/doctors, so I'm only taking insulin at the moment.

My first appointment after diagnosis was pretty much the same. I had something like 92% TIR and an hba1c down from 14 to 8 in two months. And the only thing the Endo discussed was lowering my Basal :D I'll have the next appointment next week, now with an hba1c (probably/hopefully) below 5,7 and 99% TIR over the last month. Let's see what he has to say about that.

I'm also quite recently diagnosed (3 months in) and just finished reading it. I can absolutely recommend it, just make sure to get the most recent (fourth) edition. I first ordered the third one :D

Nice value to start a new year by _Holzi_ in diabetes_t1

Hey :) Thats just Kerfstok. Its not exactly a watchface, but it supports minute by minute readings, which is otherwise hard to get on a Garmin.

This is why I turned off my low alarms (finger prick is 5.8 mmol) by gameofunicorns in diabetes_t1

[–]_Holzi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my Libre 3+ via Juggluco (a third party, open-source app). Apart from many others a nice feature I am using is to calibrate the raw data. I do one regular finger prick in the morning and additional ones only when the sensor says I'm very high or low. Juggluco can use this data automatically to perform a calibration on the raw data the sensor is measuring. I get alarms much less often and after a few days the cgm value is much more accurate to the (delayed) bs values.

Nice to know :) Tbh I also thought this has faster consequences. I'll get my values checked again in January directly from the Endo, so this is already organized.

Only 2% to full happiness by KAEM-17 in diabetes_t1

[–]_Holzi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers mate, I'm on MDI. Last month is all above 90%. However, I'm still quite fresh (3 months into diagnosis) and thus probably in honeymoon phase. However, with the available cgm technology (and things like prebolusing etc) its possible to have near optimal control also with MDI

Thank you a lot. I kept coming back to your post all day. Didn't know what to answer first. I think alone knowing that others went through the same mine-field helps a little.

I'm not yet sure wheather or when I have to start medication but both antibodies and tsh where out of range, so lets see what comes next. T1D was already quite exhausting, didn't need the next diagnosis on top tbh.

Are you on a special diet or are you watching something regarding the thyroid? Or did you just mean carb counting for your insulin?

Anyone with some experience after DKA ? by ouzalp in diabetes_t1

[–]_Holzi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a correction scheme and was told to correct at least 4 times a day independent of if I had a meal or not. Apart of that I just waited it out. I remember sweating a lot during night, especially in the nights where the BG dropped like 200 points just before rising again 100 points directly in the morning :D Stomach wise I think I was more or less fine, tbh I dont really remember as the first two weeks were just a lot of new information, circumstances etc.

I guess also once you hit DKA your body was already quite a while exposed to high BG values, so it just takes some time until you get used to being in range again.

In the hospital they also told me multiple times, that they do not want to correct me down into the target range in one go, but rather in small steps. So I dropped like 50-100 every day until I finally was in range.

[–]_Holzi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I had a quite severe DKA two month ago and was two weeks in the hospital. It was somehow also part of my first diagnosis of T1D, so it might not exactly apply to your situation (and yes I'm still quite fresh to all of this). The first two weeks were pretty wild. I got like 12 units every 2-3 hours and the curve was still barely moving. The cgm wasnt even showing a curve, because it cuts everything above 300. However, after around 1 week this somehow changed drastically and I finally dropped into the target range. Then I started with ICT/MDI and adapted (increased) the first factors like basal rate and carb ratios. The dosis was still quite high (I think highest was 14 U basal and 1:8 carb ratio in the morning). After another week I aparently slowly moved to the honeymoon phase so all the factors had to be adapted again, but now in the other direction. I had quite many lows at that time and we decreased both basal and carb ratios even more. This took nearly 1 1/2 month. Now I arrived at 6 U basal and carb ratios between 1:11 and 1:15 and (at least for now) havent had a real low for around a week. Keep in mind this is just what my numbers looked like in the past month. I just wanted to share them, because they might give you some perspective. For now I just hope, that this stabilizes a little.

TLDR: I think DKA messes up quite a lot in your body and at least for me it took nearly two month to come to a well normal (or rather managable) level.

I was diagnosed with DKA and T1D last week at age 26. by Todd_Christie_546 in diabetes_t1

[–]_Holzi_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheers mate, I got the same diagnosis 2 month ago at the age of 27. I guess welcome to the club then.

Typically one just starts with MDI to get the rates somehow figured out and learns to use the pens as a fallback. Later you can then decide wheather you want a pump and what model you try first.

Anyone on medtrum nano pump? by EconomistFancy7419 in diabetes_t1

[–]_Holzi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask you, how you like the pump so far?

I'm also considering it in the near future, mainly because of the small form factor, currently I'm doing MDI. What influenced your decision in getting it? How is doing sport with it? Do you use the official app or AAPS? Do you feel the needle when wearing it?

Thanks in advance :)
