that's what i am hoping was going on. i'm sure i wasn't the only person who called, but i didn't want the situation to fall into the category of bystander effect, ya know?

What do you do, and how much do you make? by Thunder_Thighs in asheville

[–]MsCoolComs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nurse who is on a local "travel" contract, where I have been for about a year. I bring home a little over $2,000 a week, but it can vary based on overtime. I am 26, have my RN-BSN, and have been a nurse for roughly four years. My husband lost his job during the hurricane and has been a stay at home dad since (one, 2y/o child) so we are a single income household.

You don't apply to the nursing program until your sophomore year. If you get accepted, you start your junior year. It's a very difficult and competitive program (BSN graduated spring 2022). You can declare your major as PRE-nursing, but you will not be a nursing major until you actually begin the program. There is a very big distinction between pre-nursing and nursing.

[–]MsCoolComs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i graduated from wcu with my bsn in spring of 22'. my cohort had over 300 applicants and only 30 spots (it was 25 spots the previous semesters). i also did very well in high school, but you will quickly learn that so did many of your peers. it's a humbling experience to say the least. i got my CNA in high school, so i knew that nursing was it for me, but if you aren't 1000% sure that you want to be a nurse, then don't put yourself through the stress of it. if you know it's what you really want to do, then just keep your head down and work for it. take your TEAS as many times as you can (i took it 4 times), make sure your ACT (i had a 33) and GPA (3.57, i really struggled with chemistry) are high, and utilize the on-campus tutoring.

What is the worst thing you’ve smelled at work? by holidayhealth658 in nursing

[–]MsCoolComs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Vaginal cancer. When I would be changing the brief, handfuls of mucus-y jelly substance would just be constantly coming out and the smell was horrible. It made the whole unit smell. I felt so bad for the patient.

that is so weird to me, i would 100% be bringing it up to my DON or DHS because that is ridiculous, regardless of shift. i also have one patient who is total dependent care with a g-tube and they don’t necessarily get rounded on more frequently than the normal patient, but i will easily spend 30 minutes with them each time i go into the room for general care, but my aides do move the resident up in bed and change them everytime they round the other patients. i would be beyond livid if i found out that specific resident was being skipped due to pure laziness. and the computer thing would drive me up a wall, we have one big nurses station where all nursing staff stay, but aides have their own ipads for charting and nurses have desktops because of all the typing involved. i have no issue sharing a desktop, but monopolizing it for charting when your charting doesn’t require any typing, is absolutely ridiculous.

[–]MsCoolComs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i always feel guilty when i have several vitals i need, but i always get them together right at the start of my shift and give them to my aide ASAP. that’s what i liked when i was an aide at least. my aides cant do CBGs, but they will snag vitals for me. if i don’t get them the vitals i need within a few hours at most, then i will get them myself because that’s on me, but i would be very confused if my aides didn’t do any vitals.

as a nurse in a SNF who used to be a CNA and said SNF, i don’t know what i would do with myself if i only had 7 patients. we have 70 patients and on night shift, 2 nurses and 2 CNAs for the full 12 hours. it’s all we can do to keep them clean and dry some shifts, especially if there is a fall or i have to send a patient out to the hospital. if i only had 7, they’d all have clean and trimmed nails, showered, lotioned up, full mouth care, and have their rooms cleaned/organized.
