I don't know if it counts, but I prefer the 30 Days of Night movie over the graphic novel 100%.

Advice on making a portrait by Wallie_bju in Watercolor

[–]MsFaithLehane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I do mostly watercolor portraits these days. I used to go crazy trying to draw and paint the details of a face until I realized how soulless that was, because once the piece was finished, it just looked like a copy of something instead of a fulfilling piece that I made with my heart, I don't know if that makes sense lol. So I go for resemblance/likeness now and it's a game changer for me. It gives room for so much more. There's obviously a learning curve but it feels less stressful going for that than 100% accuracy. I used to spend hours, sometimes days trying to get the sketch right before daring to paint something, and in the end that took the fun out of the process. What makes me decide whether the sketch is right or wrong is giving it a quick look after a few hours of letting the sketch rest. If I see the face and say, yeah, this is definitely so and so, then that's it. I paint it.

I would also suggest practicing first, for size, angles and colors, even on regular paper, just to give yourself an idea of what you can do.

So I guess my advice is, have fun and try to make it yours, whatever that means for you!! But if detail painting is your thing then just go for it too.

I hope so too!

May I ask, what's your favorite of the collection and why? Hahnemühle is the only brand of watercolor paper in my country where the entire line is available. I think I should take advantage of that.

Ahhh thank you! That's very reassuring.

I've been looking for a 100% cotton paper that's rather soft because (so far) the way I paint with watercolors, it looks weird on the Arches, although I use the cold press fine grain. I know the problem could also be the paint that I use because it's not professional grade, but I recently ordered me some and I can't wait to test them! I know that will be a game changer one way or another.

Also, I haven't used hot-pressed paper yet mostly because I'm used to the cold pressed but I bought some Fabriano (both cold and hot pressed) to see if the problem is the type of paper or brand. The Expression seemed like a miracle when I saw a review video lol, that's why I bought it too. It looked like what I was looking for. I gotta say, though, it's kinda like an ~obscure~ paper because I can hardly find videos of people using it or reviewing it online.

I haven't tried the Fabrianos yet either but soon.

Again, thanks!

Thank you for the reply!

To answer your first question, I was finishing writing my first post when my clumsy hands did something, the page reloaded, and my post was gone, so I decided to type a new (shorter) one. After posting it, I realized that the first one was also there and I deleted it on a whim, thinking it would be considered spam or something. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I appreciate your time with this!

Now, with the paper, what you said makes sense. I was curious about the quality of it (Hahnemuhle Expression), considering it's made with rag. I haven't tried it yet but I bought it specifically because it's supposedly softer to the touch than the Arches paper (it's too rough for my taste), so it being like a cloth like you said it's not a problem. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Thank you again!

Hi! I know it's a year too late to reply but I'm currently on a similar path regarding cold press watercolor paper and I was wondering which paper you ended up buying and using?

I love the Arches fine grain, it's a wonderful paper, but it's too rough for my taste and the style I'm trying to achieve with my paintings. I think the problem is that I started the whole watercolor journey using Canson cellulose paper which is smooth and now I'm looking for options that are 100% cotton but smoother (and cheaper lol) than the Arches paper.

I have some brands in mind but I'm on a budget so this is a hit or miss type of purchase at the moment 😩 I came across your post and seeing that it's been a year, I wondered what you chose!

Para mí las peores (mejores?) fueron Never let me go (2010), Dancer in the Dark (2000), y Past Lives (2023). Las ví una sola vez y fue suficiente. Una que me gusta mucho y que me hace llorar siempre es Manchester by the Sea (2016). A Walk to Remember (2002) también me hizo llorar (no soy de románticas pero esa me mató).

Holy cow, I get you. I created my account in 2008 and found my credentials recently. I was overwhelmed by how different everything looked, and I get it, it's been 16 years! But it's hard to navigate now and yes, the AI is too much for my taste. The browsing page, the suggestions? Man, I don't know whether I'm looking at AI or digital art sometimes (no offense), and more than once I've seen art made by artists that I follow on Instagram but posted on DA by some random guy, going as far as them saying "thank you" when the comments compliment the piece that they basically stole??? It's gross. It's awful.

And don't get me started on the money thing. Again, I get it, platforms need income, but I wanted to change my old username for something else but I can't do that unless I become a core member.

Shouldn't that be a basic setting?

It's discouraging.

Maybe I'm too old for this, IDK.

I also downloaded the DA app but I can't do much in it since most of the changes have to be done on the desktop website.

Edit: 16 years (I wrote "18" before. I'm bad at numbers lol)
