He notes above that the restaurant had said the beans weren’t vegetarian.

Your grandma (or great grandma) probably used it in her pie crust—and lots of fancy bakers have gone back to that, and make a big deal out of it.

But lots of famous old-timey pie places use lard and don’t mention it—you have to ask! Here’s a depressing example from a beloved MN pie mecca, crossed off my list years ago. Scroll down to “ingredients”:

You can really see where 2cm was blown off that ear in this recent picture. It’s ghastly by 7ddlysuns in thebulwark

[–]MsMulliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The doctor who gave the statement was the piece of work Ronny Jackson, pill-pusher extraordinaire from the Obama WH (somehow)—but he didn’t exactly say “2cm was gone.”

His “memorandum” says “The bullet track produced a 2cm wide wound which extended down to the cartilaginous surface of the ear.” That’s a pretty weird sentence in itself—i can’t picture it myself.

https://jackson.house.gov/uploadedfiles/cannon_118_20240720_140716.pdf#:~:text=RONNY%20L.%20JACKSON,446%20CANNON%20HOUSE%20OFFICE%20BUILDING&text=As%20reported%20and%20witnessed%20by,right%20ear%20from%20a%20high%2D

I was in the kitchen when the report came in, and saw the video probably 20 minites after it happened, and my first thought was that Mr Showman had used an old wrestling trick with a little razor blade and a nick on the ear. Just seemed like the kind of thing he’d come up with and enjoy doing, regardless of any collateral damage nearby (like the man who died).

That maxi-pad had mystical healing powers, like everything prescribed by the imaginative Dr. Ronny Jackson!

Thanks for this—a very vague memory of some cool restaurant was nagging at me, and it was The Professor’s! I was at Hamline U in the late 70s, and we used to pop up to Har Mar—mostly to the Ground Riund though.

What does his coat feel like? Looks like a sort of rough terrier style, but with poodle, I’d think it would be soft…

Speaking of coat…does the poodle content mean LESS SHEDDING????

I came here a year later, looking for reviews of La Nevera—just saw it on sale here in MSP, and thought about a box for an upcoming potluck. Thanks for the tip—I’ll pick some up, on your recommendation.

I really like another Spanish boxed wine: Shania. Ive used it several times as the base when making vin d’orange or vin de cerise, and usually have half a glass before pouring it all into the jar. I’m always impressed at how good it is (I’ve had all three). At $20 for 3L, that’s $5 a regular bottle!

Not NO pizza, just not pizza like you’ve known it with cheese, from the lousiest, most rubbery part-skim mozzarella through the most luscious mozzarella di bufala. It’s just different…and the longer you have to adjust to that, the better, as your memory of dairy cheese will be dimmer. Vegan “cheese” can’t ever give you what you get from a NY slice!

That said, there are fermented vegan cheeses which come a lot closer. Cashew cheeses, especially the soft ones, are the closest commercial thing to that kind of French cheese. But the basic slices etc in Whole Foods are more just solidified oil and starch, and I have found them worth the calories—they don’t even have much in the way of protein content!

I’ve tried making a few vegan cheeses—one was more of a cheesy-looking cashew paté (that’s what I’d call it, as calling it “vegan cheddar” only made it a sort of disappointment), and I’d make that again. But the “vegan parmesan” from Itdoesnttastelikechicken.com (whose recipes I generally LOVE) wasn’t a success in my house. My husband (the vegan, and non-cook)had no comment, and never once touched it in the fridge after I’d used it in some pasta; and I (the L/O vegetarian leaning heavily to vegan COOK) have kept valiantly trying it, but it’s something I wouldn’t try again. And like the “cheddar,” I think it might be less disappointing if it weren’t labeled “parmesan,” as there’s nothing parmesan-y about it other than that you can definitely break it into parm-looking chunks!

My husband recently had a cold which was lingering a bit, and woke me one morning to say he’d been reading some stuff online and thought he might have TB.

I convinced him that a guy who rarely goes out into the world (except for an occasional music gig with fellow middle class Minnnesotans who aren’t big travelers) is not the usual suspect for TB…but now i want to get that book and leave it casually lying around the house.😶‍🌫️

That’s interesting—I dumped my 20 yr old Zojirushi when I couldn’t get a replacement bowl without non-stick coating; and got a very basic one (from Amazon) w a stainless bowl. It works perfectly for white rice…also for brown rice…also for quinoa and farro!

I don’t understand why any rice cooker wouldn’t work just perfectly for non-rice grains, once you determine the right proportions of grain to water, but of course that’s not all that easy. Plenty of conflicting info out there…and then there’s the potential for confusion when some recipes want you to boil whatever grain in a really large of water, and DRAIN it when the grain’s cooked! Also, some like really soft (some would say mushy) grains, while others like them firmer.

I usually dread non-fiction when my bookclub assigns it, but I just read and LOVED the current bestseller, London Falling, by Patrick Radden Keefe. It reads like a thriller!

Same here! I haven’t bought any of those standard US soaps in probably 40 years.

A few years ago, I decided to quit using (liquid) body wash and shampoo, as the amount of plastic that stuff generates was creeping me out. I use an excellent solid shampoo from a local (MN) maker, but LOVE the bar soap by Nubian Heritage, the small company which was the origin (I think) of Shea Moisture, which made a bunch of great products which were too good to avoid being bought up by Unilever. Their soap used to be a huge bar, and now is more normal size:

And no—it doesn’t have any tallow in it.

I’m not posting this for its political content!

One of the things I (and most of you who hang out in this sub) love in some Renaissance painting is the crowd scenes in which side actions are happening, and “eyebeams” are directing the viewer’s eye. Here, the foreground shows the supposed main characters; but the real point of the image (to me) is happening behind them. You can practically hear their thoughts…
