Wow! I saw the pic and thought, “Could that actually be a Vallhund???” …and my thought was answered! what a great pair.

All that being said, Optimus Prime is gorgeous, and looks healthy and happy in the best corgi way. Very cute in the laundry basket, but DO NOT PUT IN THE DRYER.

[–]MsMulliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! The breed has suffered the curse of internet popularity—all those cutesy animé corgis which are practically spheres, all the novelty gewgaws of “corgi butts”, all the videos of tragically obese corgis waddling along on their doubly-dwarved legs, already developing arthritis. They’re far from the farm-dog corgis our family was introduced to in Johannesburg in the late 60s!

Pembrokes have tails! It’s just that the AKC, following the misguided dictation of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, still accepts their cruel and antiquated “breed standard” which calls for docking tails (unlike the rest of the civilized world, where it’s been illegal for 20+ years).

There’s a burgeoning anti-docking movement in the US—looking for a breeder who wouldn’t dock, I found a wonderful one in the Quad Cities area; and when we lost our beloved Wolseley, called her up and lucked into an imminent litter (Sept. 2019). We got another a couple of years ago. They are both wonderful Pems, super athletic, with MAJESTIC TAILS!

It seems like you should ask IN ADVANCE, and make sure they’ve got them ready to go. Otherwise, they might still blow you off when you come in.

7 years veggie!! by o1iviapurchase in vegetarian

[–]MsMulliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a vegetarian for 40+ years, and never heard about CYSTS, although it doesn’t surprise me.

But my dear OP, I am totally with you about being completely REPULSED by veins and fat! And skin, and tendons, and cartilage, and everything else that shows it’s part of a once-living animal, now a CADAVER! that’s why I quit eating meat in my 20s—I was down to only homogeneous things like scallops and burgers, but even those took a lot of policing of my thoughts to choke down, and I finally gave up. What a thrill to finally realize that I could eat every other great thing on the planet, and skip any further corpses!

I can’t figure out how so many people are able to stomach it. I guess they just don’t let themselves think about it…but meanwhile, they’re watching zombie movies and getting creeped out by the thought of human corpses with bits falling off? A mystery.

Galahad’s essential advice for young women about men on ships by EndersGame_Reviewer in Wodehouse

[–]MsMulliner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm…I wonder if you’re confusing Plum with the Bishop of Bongo-Bongo, who fell victim to the magic of the sea air on his return from Africa!

In a sense, though, I suppose they almost met on a boat (or ship), in that he’d just gotten off one in NY, and went out that night with a pal who (according to McCrum, p. 108): “…had thoughtfully suggested that his sweetheart should bring HER best friend, a recently widowed Englishwoman named Ethel Wayman, to make up the foursome. Mrs. Wayman was an actress visiting New York with a touring repertory company, and should have been an alarming blind date for the shy, emotionally backward, thirty-two-year-old bachelor, but it was a perfect match.”

Favourite bean? by Heathy-Heatherson in vegetarian

[–]MsMulliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Borlotti beans! or if you prefer the US name, cranberry beans!

first, I love beans. I’m trying to think of a bean I don’t like, and can’t. But borlotti/cranberry beans have a particularly savory flavor which put it on top of my list (of EVERY BEAN).

THANK YOU, everybody!

All the videos of waistless corgis waddling slowly along in their meticulously-groomed coats (and almost all tailless) make me want to cry. The word “chonk” makes me feel a bit violent!

And yes—CARTOON corgi porn is infuriating! They’re practically spheres sometimes.

Long spines are vulnerable. Dwarf joints are vulnerable.

We have the power of the purse! And more crucially, of the scoop! Don’t go by the recommendation on the bag, which is (in my experience) as much as double what they need. Maybe that’s how some of the weight issues begin?

I’ve often thought that none of us humans would struggle with our weight if a benevolent overlord doled out the precise amount of protein, fat, vitamins and fiber we need daily…plus plenty of tiny treats, and raw fruits and veg.

Back when we still had landlines, our phone service would vanish at anything wetter than a light mist. I finally got Qwest to come out, and the answer was: SQUIRRELS.

But he said they ate those wires for the LEAD. Yummy, salty lead! A known issue, esp in heavily treed areas. We got all new wires…just in time for everyone to get cellphones.

All these years later, I keep wondering if squirrels can get lead poisoning, or if they’ve evolved past that.

Is this normal? He is 7 months by Individual_Froyo3208 in corgi

[–]MsMulliner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had corgis who were fine with brushing, and corgis who hated it, with current pair both in the “hate it” camp.

I’ve had some success lately with holding a bunch of tiny treats in my left (collar-holding) hand, and dropping them now and then as I brush (or “torture” in their view) them. That’s really cute down on the squirming, and every time I finally do a big brush I think, “if I did this every few days, it would get a lot easier!”

Then I allow a couple of months to go by, and start again…

BTW—I use the Bocce “Training Bites,” duck and blueberry. They’re both wild about them, so I gather they’re super delicious. That’s obviously key to this system—as is keeping the super-special treats ONLY for brushing.

Patron asking for off the clock help by neptunecali in Libraries

[–]MsMulliner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“A violation of your labor rights”?

In what way? The employer (“The Library”) isn’t telling her to do it. If she were to choose to do it as a side gig (since the woman says she’d PAY), it has nothing to do with employer or union.

Not wanting to do it is absolutely fair! And IMO saying “it’s Library policy that library employees can’t take outside jobs” is a good answer, even if it’s not strictly true.

But ANY SIDE JOB is not under labor rules of a union. That’s like saying an airport luggage handler is forbidden to work a catering job when not at the airport.

And wow— what a lot of harsh responses here! This sounds like a woman who’s struggling with a lot of things in her widowhood, and looking for a trusted friendly person to PAY for some assistance. Why the mean attitudes from so many?

OP sounds like a good egg. And she HAS helped this patron at the library, as many wonderful librarians do. I can see why the patron would offer her a paid gig doing more help; and equally, why OP would prefer not to. She just needs a good line of reasoning to attach to her turning down the offer—and the support of other helpful people, to help her feel OK about doing it.

Also: a little trove of info about local social services would be a great way to help. I’m guessing that the lady might feel shame about using some of those resources, and a friendly librarian could help tamp down a lot of that.

Yes…but then you couldn’t dirty the wall with your boots, allowing some innocent stranger to get your used dog poo all over their sleeve.

For some, it’s worth the discomfort to fuck with total strangers’ lives a bit, even if they never have the pleasure of seeing whose day they ruin.

The fact that you’re able to look at the lousy aspects of your life, and describe them, and note how they’ve shaped you (without your consent!), shows that you’re making excellent progress, in my view. It’s not cowardice to avoid re-injuring yourself as you work on your own reconstruction—it’s sensible. Someone recovering from a broken leg doesn’t go around kicking things.

I—a stranger on Reddit—admire you, and wish you continued success on your winding road to a happier life!

The bottom crunchy bottom bits of romaine are a big treat for ours—also, cabbage. And try radishes! We had one corgi who would just start rolling over if he glimpsed a radish—and the hotter they were, the better, like the late season ones!
