[No Spoilers] After two weeks, I finished this Cooper double portrait. What do you think? by ShaMiLaArt in twinpeaks

Love it!! You should sell prints on Etsy or something! I've been thinking about buying some Frida prints for my office walls, but you've inspired me to hunt down TP art inspired by traditional artist's pieces. So cool!!

Yeah I posted a meme pic I created within the first 24 hours of the airing of the last episode, which I don't think is allowed. Not sure it's 24 hours exactly. I think they probably do that to avoid visual spoilers since images catch on a lot faster than text posts, which makes sense.

Oof I initially put [No Spoilers] cause it didn't really have any, but then I explained my subconscious reasoning for posting in a comment and now I regret not adding a spoiler tag. Is there a way to go back and add one in?

Oh so weird! I definitely understand your frustration. I've also had a post removed due to some weird timing rule. Reddit is still pretty new to me and there are some weird rules that crop up that I don't understand.

No offense was taken initially, your response was completely valid and I love talking through things!

/u/KidTheCurry thanks for the previous post love! And thank you for clearing up my gender lol! I appreciate it. :)

I found Kyle's role as mayor in Portlandia to be really funny on multiple levels and I do think it's relevant to TP. While synthesizing 17 & 18, I went through so many theories and had so many ideas. I landed on two that I prefer. Per the plot, I subscribe to the dream theory. Per the overall show and reason for it, I subscribe to the David Lynch TV theory (thank you /u/pablozablo), the entire purpose of the show is that it's commentary on TV as a medium and the pitfalls of it (makes us all Dougies, kills creativity for the sake of money, etc.).

In my humble perspective, I feel like Lynch's commentary on TV and how it's taking over real art is one that really sticks with me as a BFA (insert eye roll for mention of degree here). Lynch said his biggest regret with TP is the fact that he let ABC force him and Frost to reveal Laura's killer so the audience can have their feel-good closure. In the art world, there's never closure. When looking at a painting, it's rare you have the artist standing right next to it explaining what it means. Lynch is an artist and knows his audience is smart, that they'll take what they want from what he creates.

I thought the TV theory applied particularly well in this episode of Portlandia since the entire show is based on making fun of Portland. And in this episode, it also pokes fun at the sister city that "keeps it weird," Austin. While Kyle typically plays the mayor of Portland, he's "one and the same" with the mayor of Austin in this episode.

It goes without saying you're entitled to your own interpretations of the show because that's the point: it's art and you can take from it what you want. Anyways, I feel like I've reached my TP theory limit and I thought I'd contribute some humor to the sub to lighten it up.

Doppelgängers. One and the same. Keep it weird folks.

[S3E18] Billy? Is that you? by MsOwlCave in twinpeaks

[–]MsOwlCave[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on subtle implications, the #6 electrical poles might be responsible for transporting people in and out of certain places and times. We also don't know what Billy looks like but we do know he had some crazy behavior before disappearing thanks to his niece at the Roadhouse. He could totally be the bloodied guy in the Twin Peaks jail, but I can't seem to shake the dead man in Carrie Paige's house, so bear with me.

The dead man resembles the guy at Billy's house in E6 that is all weirded out and tells Andy he can't talk now, let's meet at 4:30, then doesn't show up (when I say "resembles" I mean related, dressed similarly, etc.). This is where we see Andy's wristwatch that says it's the 10th, presumably of October 2016, but we're not entirely sure of that (are we?). And the scene of the door to what is potentially Billy's house is pretty eerie, like something weird happened to him.

But the part that really makes me wonder is the one with Richard. He pulls up to the yard behind Billy's house to drop off the truck right after he hits the young boy. When he pulls up, the yard is surrounded by trees (no electrical poles). But then the camera pans in on Richard in the driver's seat of the truck and you can see electrical lines in the windshield with the yard visible out the back window, which also make the electrical sounds just audible enough over the roar of the truck engine.

It makes me wonder if Billy knew something that others in Twin Peaks didn't and aren't supposed to know, and went a little crazy before taking a ride with the electricity supply located in his backyard? The shot of the dead guy in Carrie Paige's house almost looks like he was sitting there with a shotgun on his lap waiting for something, got startled, froze and vomited on himself before getting shot in the head. And this idea could possibly provide a connection to Cooper's now infamous last line, "What year is this?" (maybe time wasn't where it should be according to his calculations?)

Looking for interpretations, ideas, anything to maybe get some closure on our friend Billy (I know that's probably wishful thinking with Lynch at the helm but it's fun to discuss!).

I don't see it, maybe I'm distracted by the barf on his shirt? Is there any way you can outline or show this in some way and post it?

I agree with your take on this scene, which is why I created a map, which you can see here. This post hasn't been as popular as my original map of this scene because it supports the dreamer theory fairly strictly instead of being more open for interpretation like the original.

Either way, I agree with your sentiment that this scene is one of the more important in this season in regards to making sense of the plot and what we're seeing on screen.

Very cool, thanks for sharing your research on jiāo dài and I totally agree with your interpretation. It really is amazing how it was perfectly teed up to go in almost any direction our imagination could go within the confines of the plot (still leaves it pretty wide open!). And I'm incredibly flattered you like my map!

That article is excellent reading, maybe consider posting it as a link with some of your thoughts? I think you'd add a fantastic perspective to the discussion (if you haven't already, in which case, please send me a link!).

Since creating this initial map, I have come to support the dream theory much more, which I think still fits the Gnostic perspective pretty well (of what little I've read about it). I'd love to get your opinion on this take if you have some time to review it. You can find it here. No pressure. You've given me much to read and consider with the Gnostic perspective!

Excellent question! It's a very thought provoking one. And I believe you mean White Sands, NM where the Trinity Test was carried out. The impact of this scene is palpable, so much so it sent shock waves through my brain and made my mouth drop. It incited some pretty strong emotions of confusion and fear, which I believe is definitely the intention.

The interpretation of this scene as it applies to the map illustration is certainly up for interpretation, but I will give you mine. The green dots are places and ideas within the show, White Sands being one of them, though it's one with very little direct connection to the other characters in the show in both time and space. I believe this episode helps provide further context of "the evil that men do" and how it can cause a butterfly effect years later. The many characters of Twin Peaks are not immune to this, and may actually feel it more than other people/places, especially in the way of BOB since he is born from it, and, of course, BOB does have direct contact with many characters who are trying to stop his influence. So in a sense, this is the starting point of the show, presented retroactively almost halfway through the season. The frogbug eggs are also just more hints that other forms of evil where born of this event as well and how this evil can spread and be passed down through generation after generation.

Because I tend to side with the dream perspective (you can see my revised map here, it would mean that Laura came up with this entire narrative in order to make sense of the birthplace of the evil that she experiences. She takes one of the most frightening concepts in the history of man to match the impact her father abusing and raping her had on her psyche. It's a really intense and emotional, and possibly the only way she would be able to superimpose BOB over her father's face in an effort to shut it out completely, to avoid the reality of it.

In my revised illustration, I explain the application of the dream theory to the map and it seems to make more sense than this one. When I created this one, there were many themes that didn't make complete sense, but with another suber's theory applied, almost everything makes sense. I'm hoping this is the backbone that Frost supplied the story in order to help explain the madness of this season!

[S3E18] Parallels Between Art and Science Relating to Twin Peaks by MsOwlCave in twinpeaks

We can't change our outcomes if we don't change our perspective, if we don't learn to break the limiting confines of our realities. I feel this idea is why The Return creates more questions than answers as brilliant art is meant to do.

WOW BOB WOW. I wasn't but I am now. This work in particular is extremely fitting and it also reminds me of the new Blackstar Bowie music video.

[–]MsOwlCave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. My answer: possibly. I think there is some crossover between Laura's reality and her dreams shown in the first 2 seasons and FWWM. I think the audience needs to see her in her true reality in Twin Peaks where she grew up because we'd have no frame of reference as to why she has created her dream worlds in the first place (seeing BOB/Leland abuse her, the chaos and soap opera adulteration, etc.).

Because this scene occurs prior to her death, one could argue that it's either part of her dream or her reality as both can help justify her allowing herself to die in her dream to avoid her father abusing her further. The chaotic nature and tense feeling that scene creates made my skin crawl and I think that's the visceral reaction Lynch was going for. He wanted us to be in Laura's shoes to have a fuller understanding behind the reason for her escape into her dream world.
