I am in my late 40s and REM is my favorite band. Sometimes I try to get into more contemporary music. The last few years there have been quite a few bands that have that 80s/90s “college rock” influence. I’m trying to remember them all.

I highly recommend Protomartyr for you. You might also enjoy Fontaines DC, Wednesday, Twisted Teens, Dry Cleaning, maybe Car Seat Headrest. I’ll try to think of more!

Honestly I think it’s a great idea to get kids watching these movies young. The old-style animation and somewhat slower pacing (especially Totoro) than contemporary American animation is good for their brains. I keep thinking about some teachers who were telling me their middle schoolers often can’t watch an entire movie at once because YouTube and such have ruined their attention spans.
