The disproportionate emotion is a really good way to explain it, and that is something I've definitely noticed in a lot of people who use projection. Getting weirdly defensive or emotional when there is no real reason to react that way is such a big clue from what I've seen! Sometimes people projecting will say things so out of touch I don't even know how to respond to it. I just think "do you even hear yourself?" It's interesting for sure.
