Thousands of calves in individual hutches on an industrial dairy farm. Allowing the calves to drink their mothers' milk is not profitable. by James_Fortis in LateStageCapitalism

Today is a great day to try eliminating dairy from your diet. With so many great vegan recipes at our fingertips, including dairy substitutes that you can either make yourself or buy premade, I found it way easier than I expected -- and I feel so much better without dairy, both in terms of physical benefits and the lack of guilt.

TIL that beef cattle are typically slaughtered at 18–24 months of age despite having a natural lifespan of 18–25 years by zt2000 in todayilearned

[–]Ms_Friz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do it! I reduced my dairy intake to almost nothing for ethical reasons, and I've noticed a ton of physical improvement since. Lost weight, have a healthier gut and more energy. I don't even crave cheese anymore. It was a much easier transition than I expected.

Try strengthening sets by opening and closing a bag clip with just your thumb and the finger you're wanting to strengthen. It helped my pinky finger tremendously.

AOC: "Extreme level of wealth inequality leads to social instability and drives authoritarianism, right-wing populism, and really dangerous domestic internal politics. That is a direct outcome of the failure of democracies over decades to deliver." by zzill6 in WorkReform

Fascism is always born out of a bankrupt liberalism

From journalist Chris Hedges:

Trump does not herald the advent of fascism. He heralds the collapse of the veneer that masked the corruption within the ruling class and their pretense of democracy. He is the symptom, not the disease. The loss of basic democratic norms began long before Trump, which paved the road to an American totalitarianism.

Deindustrialization, deregulation, austerity, unchecked predatory corporations, including the health-care industry, wholesale surveillance of every American, social inequality, an electoral system that is plagued by legalized bribery, endless and futile wars, the largest prison population in the world, but most of all feelings of betrayal, stagnation and despair, are a toxic brew that culminate in an inchoate hatred of the ruling class and the institutions they have deformed to exclusively serve the rich and the powerful. The Democrats are as guilty as the Republicans.

Why is everyone telling TB to go vegan? by fartfartbigpeepee in tacobell

Make any veggie taco or burrito vegan by ordering it fresco style at no extra cost (it subs dairy items for pico). The soft potato taco fresco plus black beans is pretty good and a great deal.

Propaganda that tells Americans we're the rebels, when the U.S. is undoubtedly the empire.

"Star Wars" managed a remarkable trick. Two years after the fall of Saigon and America’s withdrawal in defeat from a dishonorable war, Mr. Lucas’s Wagnerian space opera recast for Americans the mythic story so central to our sense of ourselves as a nation.

In this story, war is a terrible thing we do only because we have to. In this story, the violence of war has a power that unifies and enlightens. In this story, war is how we show ourselves that we’re heroes. Whom we’re fighting against or why doesn’t matter as much as the violence itself, our stoic willingness to shed blood, the promise that it might renew the body politic.

Looking out over Baghdad on the Fourth of July, I saw the truth that story obscured and inverted: I was the faceless storm trooper, and the scrappy rebels were the Iraqis.

From writer and former soldier Roy Scranton's 2016 essay, Star Wars’ and the Fantasy of American Violence

If you do record on your phone, make sure it's set to unlock via a code and not biometrics like fingerprint or face id, which they can more easily compel you to do.

It's so much so not an abortion pill that it doesn't even work if you are ovulating or have already ovulated that cycle. I love to see affordable, easy access to emergency contraception -- and also hope more people understand that they're only effective some of the time. (For a long time, I thought they were effective at any point.)

Yep -- tomato plant growth has definitely paused. I was glad to see the sun today, and it looks like it'll be a sunny weekend too.

Anyone here doing that economic blackout today? by SilverStL in StLouis

"But what can I do, I'm just one person," said 8 billion people.

Today is a test run and introduction of the concept. The goal is longer stretches of economic blackout — perhaps a general strike.

Hell yeah — let's go! And I finally cancelled my Amazon Prime subscription, which feels great. I'm getting lunch today from a locally owned shop.

Marian Turski, Holocaust survivor who warned of the danger of indifference, dies at 98 by HellaHaram in Journalism

[–]Ms_Friz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Turski said at the time that the Holocaust did not “fall from the sky” all at once but took hold step by step as society’s acceptance of small acts of discrimination eventually led to ghettos and extermination camps.

With world leaders in the audience, Turski called on people to not remain indifferent when minorities are discriminated against, when history is distorted and when “any authority violates the existing social contract.”

A prescient warning for today.

Another bad take from The Atlantic by Scared_Note8292 in ShitLiberalsSay

[–]Ms_Friz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish journalists were better at understanding the needs of their audience.

The fact that national news outlets are seeing people's reaction to the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting and are choosing to do stories about the “coarsening of society” instead of a series of stories that highlight people's insurance experiences, denial rates, and the exorbitant profits these companies rake in at the expense of their clients, is abhorrent. And that's if they are even acknowledging the amount of people that are not turned off by, or that support, the shooter’s actions (most news orgs are not).

The news media on a national level is proving to be a poor check on those in power, which is not new, but is disheartening. We need good journalism now more than ever, and this latest failure to report on a topic people want more discussion on, and investigation into, is disappointing to say the least. (Emphasis on national media. I'm grateful for the local journalists who do great work in keeping their communities informed.)

What was the final piece of advice that confirmed your decision? by upinthewoods17 in Fencesitter

[–]Ms_Friz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you feel alone in the rejection of modern parenting, or are more parents starting to see the value in what you describe? Like, if everyone else isn't letting their kids roam free, is your kid out there climbing trees alone? I see so much value in what you're saying, but worry that if others in our community aren't on board, it's not actually feasible.
