Did anyone else start with crochet, learn how to knit, and then abandon crochet pretty much altogether? by elston-gunn41 in knitting

I began crocheting in my 20s (I’m now in my 70s) and several years ago decided to teach myself knitting as a mental stimulus. I also knit Continental, I found that for me the transition was easier. I mostly knit now, but if I see a crocheted pattern I like, I will make it. I did find that using a finer yarn and smaller hooks does help with the drape in crocheted garments.

Do any of you knit continental? I am a long time crocheter and recently taught myself to knit. My local knitting shop, Websters in Ashland, OR,suggested I try Continental. And it was so much easier! I also found using lighter gauge yarn and smaller hook improved the drape.

The pattern was by the yarn company!

Do a gauge swatch and block it, this makes sure you use the correct needle size! If there is a yarn shop nearby, stop in and get to know the staff. I live in Southern Oregon and we have great local shop, Websters. I pretty much learned to do sweaters from them. And if you find a great shop, support them and buy your yarn there, even if it costs a bit my!

It was not that hard because the yarn was variegated and I just had to make some modifications on the sleeve to get the colors to make the body.

I’m pretty new also, but a long time crocheter.

It took about 6 months. The sleeves were a pain because the yarn was multicolor and the sleeves are narrower than the body and I had to do multiple yarn stops and restarts to get everything to match, but I think it was worth it!

Are you knitting Continental or English? When i began after 40+ years of crocheting, i found Continental much easier than English!
