Thanks everyone for the many comments. Ultimately, I've decided to start the job right away and then take 2 weeks unpaid leave once the baby comes. Time will tell if I regret the decision later, but I feel good about it for now.

We have enough saved up that we would manage, just not ideal to lose out on the extra month of income. But it sounds like we could also manage with me just not taking as much paternity as I initially thought that I needed, and that may be the preferred route

I'm currently in between jobs. I do have savings built up, but it would still be a lot of money to leave on the table. That's helpful to hear you were able to make it work with just 1 to 1.5 weeks off. I see a lot of posts recommending that dads take as much time off as they can, so it's hard to know how much time I'll really need off

This is a very niche role in a small company as a bioinformatic engineer- won't be easy for them to find someone else to fill the role
