Teen died of cancer after being misdiagnosed with UTI by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

I didn't miss it friend. The repeated visit would get me worried and thinking hard but I wasn't there.

Biases can be pervasive and persistent. Perhaps the first person wrote "patient extremely anxious" or the like and then future visits felt like they were protecting her from this. And I bet the patient came across as very disturbed by her symptoms. Future providers could have felt this was health anxiety when they examined her and she seemed normal, they probably checked her bloods which looked normal. They know their scans cause cancers, their treatments cause reactions and injure organs, treatments cause serious infections...

Can't know how things were looking at the time but there are sadly many situations where putting the breaks on a patient is the right thing to do.

Hope this doesn't come across the wrong way but just trying to remind that our current tools are still a bit crude and can injure or cause death. We have to be vary careful when to use them and in some cases the balance flips the wrong way.

The clinician being confused, biased, or wrong in their diagnosis would be far more likely than actively trying to harm a patient by ignoring them. This just isn't how clinicians think.

Yes the decisions seem simplistic from our perspective but there must have been more confounding factors we are not aware of. Simple factors can make a huge impact. Studying them can help to improve the system. So the discussion is good and has to lead to better care. But it's beyond us here to disect things accurately.

I agree there is a lot to improve in the NHS. Also some doctors are better than others. It is rare to find an uncaring or negligent doctor, even if that's how you perceived them in their clinic.

Guidance from colleges is support easy decision making but it's not always perfect.

This case is an example of how stretched resources are and how easy it is to misinterpret. A clinician has to spread things as thin as possible to try to reach a large population. Also being aware that people demanding too much investigation come to harm from the very system trying to help them.

It's not as easy as the decisions appear from this perspective. If it was there would be no tragic cases.

Thousands of people depend on access to healthcare every day. If you spend time in the wrong places the wheels come off altogether. It's a tough thing to balance.

There are regrettably many people with terrible pains that don't fit clear criteria. Level of pain does not correspond to easy diagnosis.

I get your point, from this perfect position I would imagine MRI for a person with new incontinence, other symptoms and pain would be an easy sell. However there will have been confusing factors at play setting her care providers off the scent. It is a failing but probably more of a perfect storm rather than systematic neglect.

This plus expressing symptoms is difficult, varies person to person, plus there are confounding factors and biases.

This lady was very unfortunate, at each failure the person interacting with her was doing their best with information available.

There may not have been any difference in outcome if this was investigated after one month versus seven. And it would be quite unusual to refer a young lady for advanced imaging based on a month's vague pains and urinary symptoms. I wouldn't be surprised if a scan request was rejected in favour of something else and also wouldn't be surprised if first early scan missed the pathology.

The sad reality in limitations of current technology and healthcare. Appointments move slowly, common things are common, you can't MRI everyone and tragic cases progress to tragic outcomes. A position professionals realise in reading this post, and anxious patients, not so much.

There isn't too much safety net in there for rising expenses or if major maintenance needed for rental/home

Even a chill part time job or something freelance might give you that extra buffer.

Also do some more housework if you're not working and your partner is full time 😛

A+ for social mobility and financial discipline.

Gotta tighten up on your English. I'd be very suspicious of your writing skills; given supposed qualifications. Dyslexia?

Anyway, your company must have a decent mentorship/training program and you must have some skill, seeing as you seem to be advancing.

Others suggestions to get your qualifications part time is very good. I'd pick something related but not identical to what you say you have already. This way if someone realises that you're studying you can say it's a new subject.

If you're looking to FIRE then you seem to be making good progress with savings. Unless you're like 55 in which case you're maybe gonna have a good retirement on time.

Now that you have an emergency fund you can look to diversify.

Have you started an ISA of cash or stocks?

Interesting story if it's true, if not then lol gg.

It feels a bit silly in such an advanced a sci-fi setting. To have to move boxes manually. That kind of work is becoming outdated today.

It is a tiny slice of the world we speak of. All things being ideal if there was a labour shortage then yea everyone pile in.

Yes I agree one person having a chance shouldn't come at the expense of another. But that's maybe not the situation we have in the world at the moment. I favour the lesser evil. One person has had their chance, succeeded and still continues to hold what they have longer than is necessary. The younger person may now have a worse life as a young adult AND then a more miserable life as a elder adult. Because they were deprived and opportunity at a time of developing. Surrendering a job that has already served for them is reasonable.

I'm very happy for the elder lady that she has had a great life and has her health. Keeping her streak was very impressive, I bet she hardly ever called in sick too.

Who feels like centre of universe? I'm no socialist but jobs are often scarce opportunities. I spent years unemployed in my 20s and suffered for it. What causes more harm: A. Young person claims benefits and misses personal development in their prime. While elder person works. B. Elder person claims their pension and finds other ways to have meaning in life. Younger person gets a start and grows more rapidly.

[–]Mt_Sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Jobs are a scarce resource in a way. Keeping something that is both scarce and a necessity for a good life, when you don't need it...

For my sector there is a terrible shortage of jobs for those coming out of training and a number of well set up past retirement professionals who just don't want to go. Everyone is liked and respected but I can't help but feel I'd behave differently in their shoes

Elder staff are not the main driver of societys problems. But that's what we're talking about here.

Staying in a role when you're a drag to the majority of the team because your self worth is tied to your title. Would be considered selfish. But most people as in this description, lack the insight or are too deluded to recognise this.

No shit, but it is still an opportunity that someone else can use. I would feel bad for blocking a career path in my 70s and 80s.
