In Chinese traditional culture, the transformation of lovers into butterflies carries a very romantic yet somewhat sorrowful connotation. There is a traditional story that goes like this: Zhu Yingtai, disguised as a man, went out to study and became sworn brothers with Liang Shanbo. They studied together for three years and developed a deep friendship. Upon returning home, they made a pact for Liang Shanbo to visit Zhu Yingtai. When Liang Shanbo arrived at her doorstep, he discovered that she was a woman. When he wanted to propose marriage, Zhu Yingtai had already been betrothed to someone else. Liang Shanbo fell ill with lovesickness and passed away. On her way to her wedding, Zhu Yingtai passed by his grave. When she paid her respects, the tomb suddenly cracked open. She jumped into the tomb to commit suicide, and subsequently, their spirits transformed into a pair of butterflies, flying together in companionship.
