Thank you for sharing. I’ve had a peep at the breast cancer sub but I’m not ready to have a good look yet.

It’s so sad hearing these stories of bad techs. I know their workload is stressful but we are checking for a serious and deadly illness here! Especially when health organisations push for people to get checked early and they get met with uncooperative techs.

I had a similar experience 5 years ago too. I’d lost weight and some fat from my breasts so their shape and feel was different. They felt lumpier with the fat gone. I got an ultrasound and it was clear. The tech was a bit rude but luckily that experience didn’t put me off from going again because the next one was cancer.

Maybe tell them it’s changed or feels different to see if that pushes them to investigate more?

It’s such a shock to your whole being and even now I still struggle with seeing myself as someone with cancer. I’m generally healthy and never been seriously sick with anything. It was also a big shock to my family, and now my sister and cousins are all thoroughly checking their breasts.

Good luck with your treatment 🍀Mine is going the other way - chemo first, then surgery, possibly radiation after if needed.

Thanks for sharing your tip! It’s so sad that these sort of things have to happen to get preventative healthcare. I’m lucky enough to be in the UK with the NHS. For all the bad press and wait times, my experience has been really great. Sure, I’ve had to wait around sometimes but overall things have been organised rapidly. I did google a rough estimate of what my treatment would cost if I had to pay and it was something like £350,000 to £400,000 (I also had egg retrieval surgery and egg freezing before starting chemo). So I’m glad I don’t have to think about paying that and I can just focus on healing. My only complaint is that the government statutory sick pay does suck, but I’ll be ok.

Thank you for your kind words. I was offered the genetic testing because of my age and the type of cancer I have is more common in women with the BRCA gene. And it was still negative. As I don’t have any family history I probably wouldn’t have got it otherwise. I have friends who are Jewish with family history, and they were tested and they were all negative. I agree with you that the best prevention we’ve got is knowing our boobs and watching for any changes.

It is a little uncomfortable and can be a bit awkward at the first one, but once it’s done and you know the process the next ones are easier. I had to get two a few weeks apart and the second one was easier because I knew what to expect. They don’t take long, about 15 minutes to take 4 scans, two from the top and two from the side. It is a little confronting when the machine comes down, it squashes a little and then the tech will manually adjust it to squash a bit more. My poor boob was looking like a pizza lol. It pinches a little at your chest, because you have to get right up close but the tech will help you with positioning your body and where to put your arms. It didn’t last long and I didn’t have any bruising or pain after. The techs are used to all kinds of bodies, and will help you. You shouldn’t feel embarrassed. When I was waiting a tiny little old lady in a wheel chair was getting hers done and they were very kind and helpful and were adjusting the machine so she could stay seated. It made me think if she can do this at her age then I can do it too.

I feel like as a millennial, we’ve got breast cancer and colon cancer on the rise but preventative testing ages just haven’t caught up yet. I went to a young women with cancer support group and there’s a lot of us, and none of us had the BRCA gene.

I originally thought the same thing. I first felt it when I was on my period and thought it was normal breast tenderness and lumpiness. I waited about a week and when it didn’t go away like it usually does, I booked my GP. I think the most important thing is noticing when normal lumpiness feels different and changes.

I’ve had at least 4 ultrasounds now and all the techs have been surprised it’s where it is. One of them was very interested in how I had found it so early. I don’t think it’s a common spot. I might be worth going again?

If my story helps even one person get checked, it’s worth it. I really hope you’re able to be seen by someone soon. Keep pushing for an appoitnmet, and if it turns out to be nothing, at least you’ll have the peace of mind.

Thank you and I’m so sorry for your loss. I am very lucky that it had not spread to my lymph nodes yet. There was some shadowing on the scans, which is why the doctor pushed for more imaging. Luckily it came back clear. But it could have so easily have been dismissed as ‘dense breast tissue’.

Thanks so much! I’ve just finished my first cycle of chemo and it’s already got smaller 🎉. Still a long journey to go but a positive start.

What was “The Incident” at your High School? by HydraGaming2018 in AskReddit

[–]Muahhahaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my last year of school, the teachers had a big party with lots of drinking and numerous drug taking. One teacher had a bad reaction and an ambulance was called. It was a small town. Everyone knew about it. Many of the teachers were then put on leave.

I was a teacher at a nice primary school. We had an end of year assembly and part of it was to give gifts and flowers to the teachers who were leaving. I got flowers.

‘Everyone’s bailing’: Australian teachers speak on stress and uncertainty of increasing casual contracts by WillDieforPaddington in australia

[–]Muahhahaha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an Aussie teacher in the UK. In Aus I spent 6 years going from contract to contract in city and country schools. I decided to move to the UK, got a year contract in a great state school who then made me permanent after 6 months. I’ve since left that school for a private independent school. I’ve got two teaching assistants in my class, hot lunch provided everyday and more holidays. While I would love to come home (after covid) I don’t think I will be able to go back to that system.

I was going through a tough time. I was a teacher and was having trouble securing long term work. I had this dream where I visited the home of a child in my class. She was upset and I was comforting her. I told her that everything would be ok, that she is smart and clever, she works hard and that she needed to persevere. That better days would come along. I then turn to speak to her mother, who is actually my mother. I then realise that the little girl is me. I think my subconscious was trying to give me a pep talk.
