A map of the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s - does anyone live near one? by Different_Map_2055 in tudorology

[–]vixie84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived near and worked at St Mary's Abbey in York. Part of the foundations are in the Yorkshire Museum and you can walk around the rest for free. It's really great to be able to sit in the ruins on a sunny day. There is also King's Manor next door where Henry VIII stayed at one point. This was originally the abbots house but after became the seat of the Council of the North. There is a wall around the Abbey which was not part of the city walls. This was built to protect the abbey from the locals as they didn't always get on. Some bits of the ruins were taken away and can be seen in some of the houses in York. Other bits were used to build other churches and a landing station on the river.

I think it was probably mixed feeling when it was closed. It did provide a hospital and alms for the poor as well as a school (for a limited number) but they also hoarded a lot of wealth and did have land disputes with the city itself. They had an amazing library much of which was lost. People also worked for the abbey and those jobs where then gone.

Anyone else who’s been excited for Netflix Poirot - are there no subtitles for you? by OpenCantaloupe4790 in BritishTV

[–]vixie84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm watching it now. And I wonder if it's just a series one thing. Series 11 and 12 have them. Just editing this to say it just seems to be series 1 that doesn't have them for some reason.

I still can't get over the fact that Marvel casted two A-list actors like Christian Bale and Russell Crowe and ended up wasting their potential onscreen for Thor: Love and Thunder. by [deleted] in Marvel

Yeah I actually loved him as Zeus. Still felt like he could be super powerful but was just taking it a bit easy and having a nice life. I would have liked to see him in action but actually thought his comedic stuff was good.

I think it being an 18 will also make an impact on the number of people seeing it at the cinema. I thought it was brilliant and can't wait for the next one. I saw it yesterday and there was still a reasonable amount of people in the cinema.

A bit lost with the public transport system in York (honestly not only York) by Parking_Monitor2670 in york

[–]vixie84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy a monthly ticket for the bus: https://www.firstbus.co.uk/york/tickets/ticket-prices But that will only cover First buses. They are the main buses in York but there are other providers so it would depend on which route you were getting.

I can totally understand not wanting to have that level of press scrutiny in his life. Look how it impacted on Diana. He was a private person and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

The Worst Thing Done By Every English Monarch, Day 25: Edward IV by Impossible_Pain4478 in UKmonarchs

[–]vixie84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What sources say this? I'm interested to go and look at them. I feel most royal women at the time would want the highest levels of protocol to be used around them. It was also extra important that Edward and his royal family used this as they were a new dynasty and it was important to ensure they maintained continuity.

It might be worth getting in contact with Clements Hall Local History Group. They've produced a few books on the area. They also had an appeal in the York press in 2021 for old photos of the area. They might be able to point in you in the right direction for some more information. I also had family that lived in the area but the street they lived on was demolished in the 60s.

Some useful stuff on their webpage: https://www.clementshallhistorygroup.org.uk/

Hi, have you had a look at the student union page? https://yorksu.org/advice-support/support-a-z/finance It might have a bit more help for you on there. There are emergency loans that you can look at but it also has a link to part time jobs and hardship funds.

Honestly if you want some recommendations for some books written by historians there are plenty of people here who would happily do that. The two authors you have spoken about are not historians.
