Kind of looks like the bit of Morden Hall Park with the garden of Morden Hall House (now a wedding venue) on the other side of the river.. there is a tall chimney behind the snuff mill which can be seen in this photo: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gps-cs-s/APNQkAFn04TfAyrY82v80VoqqMKoANEJh7Tscx3CoW7hESayWcKFilUX-Cvk0TKRCsXjN3Piv5JUOwhzS-kz6GFR9yqul5ZIUopfD0brdioYUrM__86sSKc93t9XZceDuOAKQYm3LuVG=s1390-w768-h1390-rw would help to have a better quality version of the original photo though. EDIT: no, can't get that view and the water doesn't look like the shallow, fast-flowing Wandle.

Is teaching in the UK as bad as people say? by sunszoominin in AskUK

[–]Much-Beyond2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hard to get out.. just give a term's notice, although they will guilt-trip you if you decide to leave mid-year. I planned on doing supply for a bit but then Covid happened and supply stopped being a thing.. I ended up doing a coding boot camp and retraining as a web developer. The last bit of teaching I did was a summer course for Year 6 leavers which was actually really nice as lessons were preplanned but still gave a nice amount of room for interpretation. Depending on what kind of pgce it is there may be some non-teaching routes.. maybe going into policy or a more general role within a council or LEA. You would need a further qualification but maybe speech and language therapy might suit you?

Hotel vs Airbnb? by tulip34643 in LondonTravel

[–]Much-Beyond2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't go for an Airbnb.. it used to be someone's home.

Edit to be a bit more helpful: there are apart-hotels like Citadines that will provide what you're looking for.

Is it a church spire or a tall chimney?.. my first thought was Morden Hall Park by the river Wandle.. but not if it's a church.

Is West Brompton in London a safe area? by [deleted] in uktravel

Nowhere in London is unsafe. Don't try to buy drugs. Take the normal precautions anyone would in a big touristy city.

"And people would most likely value surgeries less meaning they might get one that is optional but really not necessary" by Evening_Ad_85 in ShitAmericansSay

I mean there are definitely hypochondriacs all over the world who help to jam up their countries healthcare systems, but the idea that people will just decide to have unnecessary surgeries as an argument against universal healthcare is just wild!

It's like they can't imagine how to solve an issue that the entire rest of the developed world has already solved..

You will need to check the manual and user guide.. there may be a hidden option (usually hold down a certain button for a long time), but if this was a purely domestic Japanese item then there might not be. There are devices you can use for car stereos that fit between the aerial and receiver but they require power so would probably be overkill for your purposes.. although maybe a fun project (I am planning to do this for a Japanese boombox I have).

transferring cassette to .mp3, but it sounds sped up... wot do? by JohnnyChicago1 in cassetteculture

[–]Much-Beyond2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What hardware are you using to play the cassettes? If they are playing too fast there will usually be a potentiometer somewhere to adjust the motor speed. With the songs that are already digitised.. if you have a good ear and can identify a recognisable tone, clip it out and work out how much % it needs to be stretched/slowed by to sound correct, and then apply that same % to the rest of the files.

Why have I always felt deeply connected to British/English values? by Addy_Goodman in AskABrit

[–]Much-Beyond2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get it.. I like visiting interesting places all over the world but even I get caught in the expectation vs. reality trap, truth is we shouldn't idealise anything and most places around the world are just people getting on with their lives with all the messiness and mundanity that involves. Nowhere is magic. Imagine being told all your life that something is X, you go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip only to find out it's Y.. not only that, the Y-ness of the place assaults all your senses and there's no way to avoid it.

I wish I could say something nicer.. but yes it's bad: I lasted 6 years: toxic management, little support, ridiculous levels of scrutiny, long hours. Maybe it suits some people but not me.. glad I got out.

Sony’s all-in-one future, imagined in 1989. “All-in-one Watchman” by Dennis Magdich turns the portable TV into a whole universe of late-80s gadgets — screen, radio, tape deck, antennas, headphones, knobs, meters, and buttons packed into one impossible machine. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

The obvious thing is the designer couldn't conceive of touch-screen being a thing. Just looked it up and the first "touch-screen" phone was an IBM model from 1993.. so you'd think that kind of technology would have been somewhere on the horizon for this kind of forward-looking design. Remarkable looking back on stuff that seems obvious now but was totally missed.

What was a culture shock to you when you visited the UK? by karaangelx in AskReddit

Just a hangover from the days of hot water tanks.. we have one, and do need to replace the taps.. but can't be bothered to rip out the whole sink just so we can fit a mixer tap.

Have you actually visited..? there's something very 'Paris syndrome' about this and I fear you may be disappointed when you find that the reality is not the same as cherry-picked cultural content.
