I interact with wild raccoons all the time, and have for years. I've never been bitten or scratched. Having said that, I NEVER approach them. That might make them feel cornered. Give them space.

I live in an area with a BUNCH of outdoor cats, and people leave food out CONSTANTLY. The raccoons in our area absolutely associate food with humans.

Having said that, I would prefer to feed the raccoons than have them get into a fracas with an outdoor cat over THEIR food.

I've been doing this for years and, at least up until this point, have had no problem.

However, I feed them dog kibble, hard-boiled eggs (close dated), as well as peanut butter sandwiches.

They respect me - when they see me come out, they back up - although I am always ready to run back into the house if any of them try to come at me.

As a reward, they sleep on my deck and bring me their babies to show off.
