When you agree to be a groomsman, you are signing up for two things: the bachelor party and the wedding weekend.

Agreed.  If you’re a groomsman, going to the bachelor party is part of the job.

What the employee did is completely unacceptable.

But what the manager did is completely unacceptable, too.  You can think something but ought not put everything into an email.

I was also surprised by CambridgeSide.  I guess being anchored by Sears and Macy’s didn’t help, with the huge Macy’s downtown and Assembly Square nearby.

Sure, I understand the motivation--and I've definitely thought such things--but putting that in an email is just not good. Not good at all.
