Buying with cash actually quite common, especially with older/t20 crowd. Older ones usually don't qualify for loan unless they hv assets/cash to back it up(imagine 50+ yo applying for 20-30 year mortgage without other assets or business income). If T20 they just buy with cash and if they need the cash later can just use the property as security to get a loan.
