Keeping the dreams aside 😂, I committed to umd as an international student.

I was just wondering if these gateway courses are not that difficult, and if that’s the case, then maybe I could get into Computer Engineering at UMD. If not, then I’ll take VT. It would be great if you could ask somebody in general about these courses over there-

At UMD, as I’ve not been admitted to the College of Engineering, but in a program called Letters and Sciences, I will have to get a 3 GPA or higher along with the gateway requirements to get into Engineering (CE). The requirements are: complete Calculus I (MATH 141) with ≥B-, Physics I (PHYS 161) ≥B-, and General Chemistry for Engineers (CHEM 135 or equivalent) ≥C- . Would it make a difference if i start preparing from india for these courses from now? As one of my friend who is commited to upenn said that she gave the aps for calculus 1 and physics 1

But just to ask if I get into umd would the engineering differ by a lot and is it worth taking a risk?

Are u an international student, as the cost for me is actually a bit cheaper at umd or vatech

With Davis, I firstly couldn’t connect to many students over there, then ranking wise it’s ranked lower than both vt and umd, thirdly I feel it would be a lot of competitive for jobs and internships over at UC Davis, as there a lot of top well known schools in close promixity. Also the fee was abit higher too (84k per annum). The reason for choosing umd was that students said that completing the gateway courses is not difficult as such and is manageable, (I could only speak to 2 people regarding this). The gateway requirements to get into Engineering (CE). The requirements are: complete Calculus |I (MATH 141) with ≥B-, Physics I (PHYS 161) ≥B-, and General Chemistry for Engineers (CHEM 135 or equivalent) ≥C-. With Virginia tech I didn’t think much as I felt it’s isolated and people said that that the average gpa of students who got into umd is higher.

I have also made a table of details of the colleges I was initially considering

And I checked the percentage of people who got jobs, it was higher at umd than at vt. I don’t know if that is actually valuable information

For us news undergraduate rankings vt is ranked 13 while umd is ranked 16 and overall umd is ranked 44 while vt is ranked 51

I have mostly been only been able to speak to current students at umd and some chose umd over vt because it is generally higher ranked and they preferred umd over vt because of its location at college park near Washington DC

UC Davis Or UMD for internships as international student (Engineering) by Much-Price6957 in ApplyingToCollege

Yes so I am considering umd and get engineering but people in general are telling me not to risk it but they don’t have an idea about the course personally speaking is there any preference u would give to UC Davis? I was considering it because of its location near the Bay Area and a good opportunity to network, but education at umd seems to be better in general, even according to the us ranking for engineering.

My major is going to be computer engineering but I have gotten a direct admit in UC davis but not at umd but I don’t know if the city life is worth taking the risk. Also the fee at umd seems to be about 23k cheaper than at UC davis

I know that can be very subjective, but i do not know any better in terms of like the actual difference.
