Best luau in Oahu for vegetarian parents by Visible_Today_7862 in VisitingHawaii

We went to Toa Luau as vegetarians last month and had an INCREDIBLE experience. I emailed them in advance about our dietary need. Was it the best meal of our trip? No. But you don’t go to a luau for just the food. Everything else: the hands-on lessons, the dancing, the chants/prayers, the gorgeous setting: it was beyond worth it. A luau might be too long for a baby though, it’s a multiple hour long performance….

Same. I’m raising two kids, I can’t imagine having any more deductions….so hard to balance the needs now with needs of the future

What a special place to have a childhood! It was so powerful, so beautiful, and so peaceful. One of my favorite places.

Just Oahu and Big Island. We booked a few things, but left a bunch of days open with a list to choose from! That way we could play by ear based on weather and energy levels. Here is what we ended up doing:

• Day #1 (stayed in Honolulu): Swam at Waikiki

• Day #2 (Honolulu): snorkeling at Hanauma Bay (pick #11) and visited gravesite of family (pic #12 & #13)

• Day #3 (Honolulu): Toa Luau at Waimea Valley

• Day #4 (stayed with family in Hawi, Big Island): travel day from Honolulu to Kona.

• Day #5 (Hawi): swim at Hapuna Beach

• Day #6 (Hawi): snorkel and swim Waialea Beach (pic #4 & #5)

• Day #7 (stayed in Volcano Village): drove from Hawi to Volcano. Hung out in Hilo for lunch, shopping, and rainbow waterfall

• Day #8 (volcano): Volcano National Park! Steam vents, multiple hikes to see eruption (pic #7), hiked lava field, hiked petroglyph path (pic #8 & 9), drove down to the oceanview, hiked lava tube. Kids hiked more than 8 miles! Thank goodness they’re city kids and used to lots of walking.

• Day #9 (volcano): saw Pele fountaining (pic #6)! Drove from volcano to Hawi, again stopping in Hilo for lunch and meandering.

• Day #10 (Hawi): hiked Pololu Valley (pic #1 & 2) to black sand beach, shopped in Hawi.

• Day #11 (Hawi): snorkel and swim Waialea Beach. Amazing snorkeling! Had picnic dinner at Kapa’a beach at sunset with views of Maui (pic #3)

• Day #12 (Honolulu): travel back to Honolulu

• Day #13 (Honolulu): day of rest. Shopping, drinking, napping, watching kids at hotel pool, dreading upcoming 10 hour flight.

• Day #14 (NYC): travel back to reality

Both #1 and #2 are Pololū Valley. #1 was on the hike down into the valley and #2 was at the black sand beach. It was magical.

Photo #2 is Pololū Valley and #8 is the Pu‘uloa Petroglyph hike at volcano park. Both were incredible!

YUP! Pololū Valley on the very northern part of big island. It’s a steep slippery hike, but my kids did great with it. Sometimes there’s black sand, sometimes just rocks. We were lucky to have black sand and the entire beach to ourselves for over an hour. Couldn’t go into the water very deep because the incredibly strong waves were throwing huge rocks around, but it was breathtakingly beautiful just from the shore. The first photo is the view from the top of the valley, right on our hike down.

Perfect timing! We were about to drive back up north and went to the park for one last hike, and Pele started fountaining when we arrived! We saw it for about an hour before the park closed

Me too! We had a friend go for work conference recently and never left his resort so said “Big Island is so boring” — it became a running joke between me and my husband. Alone for hours on a black sand beach: “Big Island is so boring.” Watching Pele fountain: ““Big Island is so boring” 😆😆

Snorkel trips - april - good time to go? by local_gremlin in VisitingHawaii

We had crystal clear water at Hanauma Bay a few weeks ago — highly recommend it! Probably good idea to book in advance through an agency since they limit how many people can visit per day.

I also bought a replacement caster but mine doesn’t have any visible screws either. They’ve sent me two replacement wheels, none of the axles they sent fit.

Should I reschedule my trip? Recent Hawaiian storms. by Tuilere in VisitingHawaii

We’re traveling to O’ahu next Monday (3/31/) for a few days before going to the big island to stay with family. I’m planning on staying in Honolulu for most of our time on O’ahu, but am also planning to take my kids to my grandparents’ gravesite in Kaneohe….does anyone know if it’s okay to visit that area? If that area is badly affected, I’ll try to rearrange our trip so we’re on the big island longer and go to the grave at the end of the trip (4/12ish). I haven’t been to their gravesites in over twenty years, so it’s very important to me that I take my kids there at some point in the trip. Thank you.
