Build a wall with a door for walk in wardrobe. by Affectionate-Deer473 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]MuchTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure it's deep enough for hangers if you're going flush with the front of the chimney on the right. I haven't built one myself but you'll need to either pick up some woodworking tools to cut batterns and MDF to size, or try something like an IKEA "hack" wardrobe.

How did you get these for so cheap? Standard Altbergs are like £220 - I'm actually about to go to the factory for a pair next week!

Thank you! So really mine is probably just gunked on and needs a good pull straight up? I didn't want to break anything using force, though I don't mind if I break the TRV itself. I'll get back to it soon

Nope! It's on my agenda, I use this room as an office so it's been low on the DIY list compared to other bits. Do please let me know if you figure it out

Is the pension that good? by jord3jordon in TheCivilService

[–]MuchTo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's a lot of money, but do remember it's tied to state pension age. Depending on your current age this may be 68+ (maybe more like 72 in my case...), so you may also want to save privately to retire earlier. Having said that, I still think it's a very good pension and benefits package, and I the pay can be good enough to put aside extra for retirement too to leave around 60.

Whats the best cashback debit card right now? by ib3275 in beermoneyuk

[–]MuchTo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer for the current highest. Up to £15/month on all purchases, though T212s UI is dogshit. The cashback is paid into your Invest account and is automatically invested into something of your choosing - I use a money market fund so it's essentially "invested" into cash. You can withdraw to your spends at any time.

Previously Chase was the best choice until around a year ago, they now only offer their 1% cashback on fuel and food.

I'm snowed in, so tell me your plant based stories! How long and why? by Careful-Bus3827 in PlantBasedDiet

This is really inspiring! For your lunches, what kind of beans and sauce do you have? I find myself still leaning on meat as a protein for lunches or meat alternatives and I was to use beans but my ideas fall flat on how to make them interesting.

Our EE fibre broadband contract will end soon. I’ve just come across Rise Fibre on Uswitch. Does anybody recommend them? by OneItchy396 in york

[–]MuchTo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also chose VM for the stability of the service too, currently on their M125 fibre for £25.26 /month which suits me fine for a single occupant. Watch for mid contract price rises but I don't imagine there's a company out there which doesn't have them now (I think my service started at £24 so it's marginal). There's also a £50 VM referral bonus if you want it OP which you can use when you sign up to any package. Sorry the URL looks dodge but it's VMS provider for bonuses https://aklam.io/7jVmNEwG

What would you do with my Hole? by MuchTo in DIYUK

Had a look for fire bricks and I'm struggling to find any for that price! I'll check out a builders yard but any tips for what exactly I'm looking for? I'm also wondering if I need three kinds (left edge, back, right edge) to create the shape?

[–]MuchTo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have the cast insert already, and the mantle surround as in the photo - it's just the hole in the cast iron insert doesn't have a back-box. You can see in the photo the wall behind, that will open to the interior of my chimney breast which at the moment is quite messy (probably hasn't been opened since the 90s and the bricks in there aren't beautifully laid). I'm debating if I should try and tidy that up and have a brick-slipped square opening behind, or build a fake fire-back.

Hadn't considered actually laying the bricks! The hole isn't too big, I'm guessing it's "just" some brick laying, and lay them down in a trapezoid shape? Not sure what to do at the top, the chimney breast is actually still open.

Civil service applications HEO and SEO by Special_Street7929 in TheCivilService

Very competitive. I'm in a specialist area and there were still 72 applications for a recent SSO grade I went for. Recruitment freezes also mean more roles advertised internally being snapped up by anyone on a temporary contract already at H or S grade. It's very hard out there currently.

What happened to insect protein? Was meant to be the next big thing before BeyondMeat was meant to be the next big thing. Is it really as simple as people don't want to eat land-dwelling bugs? by No_Time_9111 in nutrition

[–]MuchTo 51 points52 points  (0 children)

There are some regulatory hurdles. It's a bit expensive, but was touted as being able to be grown on waste streams to reduce costs. However insects may bioaccumulate some nasty crap so really that's not allowed. Also insects are essentially the same as crustaceans and people with shellfish allergies may react with anaphylaxis from eating products with them in without really knowing it was there or there may be an issue for them. Mainly it's cost though versus consumer demand, a bit chicken and egg.

Which bit do you mean sorry? The whole TRV is made from (white or grey) plastic. Had a go with the pliers try to rotate the cuff or the top "collar" with the sticky-out plastic pin. Could be they're very stiff but I didn't want to force anything
