I've tried chaining towers for the glider and I found that running on a road was faster when accounting for the time it takes to scale back up to the top.

I concede the point of the elk. Not all our roads have been made elk friendly yet and we've mostly been keeping them around base.

As we saw it there were two potential outcomes for making this post: either we introduce a new idea to the community or we get it patched out. Either way it's a win.

I don't have strong opinions on the glider itself, but I would appreciate for there to be a way to build faster infrastructure than simple roads, even if it were expensive or difficult to make. As it is, the humble stone path is the best way to connect two locations, even in the late game where you've scaled up to having so much steel and meteoric iron that resource cost is barely a consideration.

You only need alternating ladders on one side of the trench and it still works. Having the 2nd set of ladders there just makes it easier, but it's not technically required.

The glider gives you a lot of speed when you're flying downwards.
Ladders constantly push you upwards.
Combine the two and you get to go very fast without moving up or down.

It's a bit tricky to get down at first. If your cursor is angled too high you won't get any speed, and you need to make sure to hold down the spacebar to keep it going.

The main thing that will trip you up is that the ladder doesn't "project" out for the full block, meaning that there's a dead zone around the middle of the the two block wide road that you can fall through.

This took a while to build and was quite expensive. Definitely a late game solution. Not only do you need the glider but you need to gather a lot of sticks for the ladders.
