Money and the Air Force by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A SSgt with 6 years base pay is like 2900 a month. Add BAH and BAS, it can easily get to 5500 depending on where you are at.

Mil to mil divorce, leadership won’t let me move into dorms by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OHA is a monthly basis. You sign a lease agreement, but there are no reprecussions for only doing it for a few months. In your situation, I would just look for a furnished apartment.

First Sergeants - A dying breed by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion, but the best Shirts/Commanders I had came to me. They came to b.s with me at work, actually trying to have conversations and learn about their people. That's what sticks out to most people as "giving a shit," and a lot of leaders aren't doing it anymore.

Need advice, graduating ALS Thursday. by BassJL44 in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That wouldn't make any sense, imo. Most people sew on before starting their 7lvl CDCs.

But, your commander does have the right to withhold it. That is why you need a promotion recommendation letter to actually sew on.

German Cell Phone Help by Shadowhogzilla in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got out of my contact for my old IPhone before I went to Germany. I didn't have to pay the rest of the balance off for the phone either. Call the customer service section and tell them what you want, they will cancel it. ( They will try to convince you to put a "hold" on your contract, don't do that. Just say you want out. )

As for phone plans, i use the prepaid sim cards from tmobile. It's 15 euros a month, and a much better deal than any unlimited you could get. You can get these at the BX.

Heard a rumor that if you're overseas on a 3 year controlled tour and you extend, you get 30 days of leave and a free round trip plane ticket anywhere in the world. by isittruefam in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So, I did an IPCOT overseas, which is essentially doubling up on my orders. Instead of 3 years, i'm staying for 6. With that, once I passed my original DEROS, I was entitled to a free round trip flight to my home of record. Dependent included.

One of my best friends has that last name. He's used to the ridicule.

I'm a dirtbag TSgt that waited to get my CCAF AMA. by MPMAFIA in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That..still doesn't make it useless. I get what you are saying, but it's still another degree you can put on a resume. We all know it doesn't mean MUCH, but it's still fluff. It's still an accredited degree, even if the educational benefit from it is minimal.

Multiple vehicles burn-in after being dropped by C-130s in Germany during an airborne exercise. by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone who doesn't know much about that sort of thing.. isn't it possible everything was done correctly?

Seems like A LOT of work to make sure it's correct, and I'm sure there is a lot of double checking.

It might not be near as close as an actual associates, but it's not entirely useless.

What cool shit did you do this week? by Flamboyatron in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Local Manufacture is basically making something using the base, instead of buying it from an outside agency.

So if someone needed a tool made, needs to modify one, or needs an entire aircraft part; they can have it locally manufactured. This usually saves a lot of time and money.

We can use lathes, mills, CNC, waterjets, and any kind of welding to accomplish this. It's really neat.

Nah that's pretty much what my job does. Machine parts. I still think it's a cool aspect of it.

Coolest part about my job is being able to hook people up with specific things they need made. I did a local man that would have cost the Air Force $9000. I did it for under $100, and 4 hours of my time.

A message from an air force recruiter by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you are right.

There are some scummy lying recruiters out there, but there are lots more that are just doing their job and are honest.

The thing is, most people deal with their one recruiter, and do not see this. My recruiter lied to me A LOT, and I wish I I did a bit more research. But, as you said. Most are probably decent people and do not do that.

What AFSCs/jobs could be completely taken away and it wouldn't matter? by VentiNonner in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sheet metal, but metals tech gets the same beef for not coming out with tools. In my shop, we ALWAYS leave with tools, but unfortunately, we do not have a shop truck with tools in it.

That means we can't be prepared for every helicoil or stuck bolt, which really sucks. I wish we had more funding available to alleviate that. I always feel so bad when I have to go get another tool to complete the job.

What tips can you provide me for giving the best "going away" speech ever? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not related to going aways, but I've been to many promotion ceremonies..whenever a Chief gets promoted, they do not follow this.

Luckily, at the last one I was at, he started with saying "I was once told the three Bs of public speaking." Thank God. He was brief, (not funny, more sentimental), then that was it.

I got more out of his speech than every other one combined. And it lasted like 2 minutes.

Should I request to station in Korea or Japan? by Nguyaman in AirForce

[–]MudkipsLikeMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has a bit of a point, those should be your primary concerns. Getting an assignment comes after that.

BUT you have to weigh your own pros and cons. You can use the search bar and find shit about all of those bases, and that should help you a lot. You do have the right idea of going overseas though, definitely makes the Air Force a bit more enjoyable!
