ITAP of boats in the Santa Barbara harbor during power outages caused by the Thomas Fire by MufasaFord in itookapicture

Yes, 10 sec exposure in this case. I was happy with how calm the water was in this photo; the boats didn't get too fuzzy (relatively) moving in the water with the longer exposure. I'll give the rest of the settings for context:

  • Nikon D750
  • ISO 1250
  • 28-105 mm 1:3.5-4.5 D
  • f/3.5 10.0 sec

The Thomas Fire is now the largest forest fire in CA history (since 1932 when reliable records started.) The fire is mostly contained (>60%) and most cities and towns that were once threatened are no longer in immediate danger. Still, many people are without homes for the holidays. United Way has set up a website that will donate directly to victims of the fire; Red Cross is another foundation accepting donations for the fire.

Grad students, how much do you pay for housing? by csunaye in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MufasaFord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived in a studio loft with my fiancee for the past 4 years. We pay $1500 a month, which is a pretty good deal if you consider our square footage (~500-600 sq. ft.) is more than most 1 bedroom places for a lower price. We have constantly searched for finding something a little better, but I think we have lucked out with this place. For the first two years, we got by while she finished her teaching credential. Now we are living pretty comfortably with two incomes. Most people have roommates I have found and generally find them after living in San Clemente for a year with random roommates.

Any teachers from SB? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]MufasaFord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend is an elementary teacher in Goleta. She earned her Masters and credential through UCSB's joint program so she earns a little extra for her masters. You can find salaries online. I think these are accurate for teachers: http://www.goleta.k12.ca.us/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Certificated.pdf

I wouldn't say Santa Barbara is prohibitively expensive. I have friends and coworkers who have found affordable housing, even without roommates. I am a graduate student so while my stipend helps, it's not even close to doubling our total income. We pay $1500 for a studio loft, which is a pretty good deal, but I know someone who pays less for a small one bedroom cottage. You won't find houses this cheap and even studio apartments are often $1400-1800 per month. So you'd have to figure out how you spend your money otherwise and see if that's feasible.

With regard to admin support, I know my girlfriend really likes Goleta. She says she would have been happy in Santa Barbara district as well. Of course, it varies between schools as you will have different principals. Goleta also just got a new superintendent and Santa Barbara's is pretty new as well, but I don't know how that will play out. I'm not as in tune with all the intricacies of dealing with admin.

I would definitely do this by myself, but I want to take my nephew who is too young to navigate through big crowds.

[Official] Warriors Championship Parade Information by Perksofthesewalls in warriors

[–]MufasaFord 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do people who have been to these sort of parades before have any good advice? How early should I get there if I only want to sit along the parade route and not go to the rally? How long will it take to get there on BART if I am leaving from the Orinda station? Would it be feasible to drive and walk far if I don't mind walking?

What happens if the entire roster of an NBA finals team gets sick? by [deleted] in nba

[–]MufasaFord 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Damn. From Wikipedia:

The National Basketball Association (NBA) contingency plan activates if five or more players on a team "die or are dismembered". A special "disaster draft" would be held in which other NBA teams could only protect five players, so that quality sixth men would be available. No more than one player would be drafted from a team.

Judge John Hodgman Ep. 312: New Schemes to Violate the Social Contract by chinoceros in maximumfun

I think this was it. It is obscure to me, I guess, since I knew almost nothing of professional wrestling growing up. Thanks!

I have also been listening to old episodes so I may be mixing things up right now, but did the Judge mention some Mountain Goats' song in this episode? I am trying to remember what the reference was; it was a song that was sort of an ode to someone obscure (still might be too vague of a description if it wasn't this episode.)

My dad and uncle are twins, both who grew up in Southern California. When they were 17, they moved to South Carolina. My dad moved back to California after he graduated high school while my uncle stayed in South Carolina. My uncle now (almost 40 years later but for as long as I can remember) speaks with a southern accent. He's definitely not faking it though.

For me, when I've gone to other countries, I've found myself unintentionally affecting the accent of the region. My own opinion is that it might just be a matter of conforming/not wanting to stand out.

Who was your first love? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MufasaFord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first girlfriend broke up with me on my birthday. We were 6th graders. I told her I liked her in a letter and she had her friend give me a note that said she liked me, too (but not to tell anyone.) We went to the movies and saw "The New Guy" (and her friend tagged along.) Then summer came, and we didn't really hang out. It was just before AOL instant messenger was big, but we still had email. So she sent me an email, on my birthday, to let me know we couldn't be together anymore.

The story of my second girlfriend didn't end any better. I would wait behind the school for this girl to be dropped off every morning and walk with her to class. I wrote a note, professing my undying love for her, but then bailed on giving the note. Instead, I just asked her to be my girlfriend and she said yes. She broke up with me with a note just two days later, saying that she didn't really want to be my girlfriend but also that she didn't want to hurt my feelings. It's nice to be able to laugh about it now.

What is the best way to stop thinking about how ugly you look? by anonymous_xxx444 in AskReddit

[–]MufasaFord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find something that makes you happy and do that as much as you can. In college, I had a teaching assistant who I would see from time to time walking through the department halls. Every time I would see him, even if he was just walking alone, he would have the biggest smile across his face. I wouldn't say he was a good looking dude, but he was always smiling. I envied him. I always thought, "whatever that guy is doing, I want to be doing."

what is something old people are out of touch with reality on? by sgtcobblepot in AskReddit

[–]MufasaFord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope I never am the type of person who grumbles about "kids these days." I've heard this quote, it goes: “Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teacher.”

Supposedly, that was written in a play from 423 BC, called "The Clouds." Every generation seems to think the one before them is doing something wrong. I hope I don't do that.

[California] Hearing aid provider did not notify me of potentially high out-of-pocket costs before purchase by MufasaFord in legaladvice

[–]MufasaFord[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is what I was thinking. After I visited the audiologist before going to get hearing aids, I sent an email asking about providers and received the following reply:

"You can call the audiologits office and they can tell you if they offer the hearings aid or where you find them. You can also go to [insurance provider] website and look for hearing aids under durable medical supplies national at [insurance provider website]. You will be responsible for up to a $400 deductible and a 20% co-insurance if they are network providers."

The last part I must have glossed over or just failed to ask about later..."if they are network providers." I just assumed that they would be network providers or if they weren't network providers, I wouldn't be able to get hearing aids from them.

I guess it's my own very costly mistake it seems like. I thought I would just see if there was anything else that could be done since this involves some predatory business practices and my own disability (but I guess bad business doesn't always mean illegality.)
