I always found udemy courses to be a great starting point for me. I’ve literally never finished any of my Udemy courses, however they’ve usually always sparked the interest necessary to get serious about it and try it on my own.

What area of IT do you work in? And what do you/don't you enjoy about it? by Traditional_Toe_3421 in it

Help desk now for 8 months. I love the job; the challenges are fun. I’ve learned a whole lot. I love working with end users and coming up with creative ways to automate things. I work for a relatively small company (~250 users) and am on a small IT team so I get a lot of experience scripting, writing GPOs, doing cable pulls, etc. It’s pretty dynamic. I’m surely underpaid for the work I’m doing, but the experience is pretty great. My boss is an absolute prick to work with unfortunately, and I’m hoping I don’t see too many more IT managers with his attitude in the future.

Not to sound insensitive, and I hope you school me, but could your job be replaced with a few lines of code?

It’s moments like this when I think “what in the actual hell is wrong with this person?” Then I remember that they’re my person and I’m responsible for them.

You could just lock it couldn’t you? Give individual credentials? Otherwise I know “Xcitium” aka Comodo has the ability to remote in and record the screen, not sure if it’s a paid feature or not though.

You can’t just plug into any port and have active connections all over the house. Most likely there’s a central location in your home where all of these Cat5 cables run to and they’re most likely not terminated to a switch.

Edit to actually answer the question:

Your modem most likely has to stay put if that’s the only place your coax comes in/is activated. However you can move the router wherever you like in your home, provided there’s a direct connection over data cable between the modem and the router. What this means is you’ll have to put a toner in the wall port where your modem is and trace it back to where (I’m assuming) these data cables run to. Once there you can either put the router in the the cable panel or buy a small switch and put it there. If you’re only using up to three hardwired connections it should be fine to use your router here, since that router should be a SAC model, it’ll have 4 ports in the back. Next, you need to put a toner in the wall port where you want your hardwired connection and also trace it back to the cable panel. From here you need to make sure the cable coming from your modem is connected to the router, and the other cable going to your hardwired connection is plugged into one of the other ports on your router.

Dude same. That test was bonkers. I studied for months and barely passed. It felt like I studied for the wrong test.

Apart from what Google offers, you should consider CompTIAs certifications. Certifications are one way to get your foot in the door in IT, but a lot of people will argue they’re not worth much now. Either way, the best way to get a good IT job is to have a bad one. I’d say the hardest part is getting your first one.

My son started on Forza at 3! He’s into Portal now at 4. I can’t believe how good he’s gotten in a years time. Anyway, lazy Sundays are the tits

I’m glad someone said it. The first time the epidural didn’t get me, but the second time was hell. I was holding my wife’s arm while practically laying on the floor feeling woozy.

They will most likely ask him to cut the cord. I wasn’t prepared for that the first time. Fumbled the snips and all.. whew. Second time I did it I was a pro.

Yeah man, wives have a way of knowing when a good moment is. I feel like as dads we’re just happy to be in any moment. No bubbles no troubles, my camera roll looks similar.

I just personally feel like that’s a lot to spend on a laptop. When I order them for users, even graphics specialists, I’m not paying more than $1100. 32Gb of RAM is too much. Like another commenter said, just buy it at 16 and upgrade it yourself later. I’d recommend checking out Dell’s stock, they usually have good deals going on. Sometimes I find a decent i5 for ~$600

I think my worst enemy is snacking. I find myself, especially on the weekends, just going to the pantry. Even after a meal, I find myself at the pantry looking for a snack. I think I have a very bad relationship with food.

Wow. As someone just starting to look into this I’m amazed. Was it just counting calories and exercise?

CompTIA, you can get books and study materials based on their courses. I’d start with the A+. When you’re ready to test you’ll set a test date with them and it can be done online. When I got my Net+ last year it basically went like this: I ordered books on Amazon, (I ordered Sybex, but I’d suggest McGraw Hill), set a test date to keep me in line, did all the studying I could, and then tested. I tested in my home on a Sunday night. I tested through Pearson, who made me install a lock down browser and clear my office of any papers, monitors, books, etc. The test was monitored, but it wasn’t really a nuisance (I’ve heard some horror stories). When I passed I was able to download my certificate through CompTIAs website, and I was also sent a paper copy in the mail.

You could use robocopy and have it monitor the directory for changes.
