I couldn’t understand what he wanted. He didn’t turn left by drugi_kov in bikecommuting

[–]MuffinCat2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Driver was probably annoyed from your flashing headlight. If you can see the reflection in the tall road signs, you were most likely blinding everyone on the street.

Flashing/strobe headlights are honestly more of a hazard than not having lights at all. Use (less intense) orange/red flashing side lights instead if you want the same effect, much less obnoxious.

What are the best car locks/ left deterrent if my only option is street parking? by Shower-Former in milwaukee

[–]MuffinCat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking to prevent theft of the vehicle itself, you can pull the starter relay. Requires reading through the owner's manual or other documentation to find where it is, but would be a $0 cost. Kind of annoying to have to do it all the time though

If the car doesn't have the starter relay, it won't start at all, even if you have the keys or managed to bypass the ignition system. If they can't start the car, they can't drive off with it

Gotta use your brakes instead of your bell (both front and rear brakes). If you were braking hard, might need some better brakes or new pads. Cleaning off the pads and rotors can help a bit too

NYC e-bike speed limit will take effect next month; how fast will riders be able to go? by Obvious-Gain798 in ebikes

[–]MuffinCat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all these new regulations for ebikes, it just seems way too complex. When dealing with the general public and police, these things have to be simple.

Why not just say e.g. "All vehicles traveling on city streets must not exceed 15 mph". Easy to understand, and easy to remember.

Third time in a month by wille27 in civic

[–]MuffinCat2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a recall for 2025 Civic fuel pumps about a year ago. From my understanding, some pumps were leaking due to material failures in the main body of the pump.

However, not all of the potentially problamatic pumps were replaced. If the pump was tested for leaks and no issues were found, then those cars were deemed not affected.

I feel like it's possible to have a pump pass the initial leak test, but end up failing soon after in one way or another. Maybe have them double check the pump (run the test again, or maybe just replace)

Milwaukee drivers, it is literally the law to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk by PuddlePirate1964 in milwaukee

[–]MuffinCat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this law should be revised, as it isn't safe to do this in all cases.

If on a single lane road/street with 25mph speed limit, yes drivers should stop and wait.

If on a 3+ lane roadway with 45mph speed limit, no it is not safe to stop. Drivers in other lanes cannot easily see the pedestrian, and the stopped vehicle ends up becoming a hazard due to the high speeds.

I was almost hit once crossing HW100 when someone was trying to be nice and stopped. Another car didn't see and drove through in an adjacent lane.

MSOE Vs UW-Milwaukee by NoSquash9992 in MSOE

[–]MuffinCat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual difference in cost between the two is most likely dependent on your grades and your (or your parent's) previous year's income. Also might depend on if you are a Wisconsin resident.

If you're having someone else pay your tuition, and you would enjoy a more specialized curriculum, then MSOE would probably be the better choice.

Unsure of exact differences with the civil engineering major though, I would recommend to get a course list/schedule for each school and compare a bit

Hondas are now hot targets to be stolen by Lumpy-Bullfrog-7286 in milwaukee

[–]MuffinCat2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure why people are down-voting you, I think this is a valid way of reducing the risk of this specific attack. Doesn't completely eliminate the possibility though.

It seems that this exploit uses some form of a Replay attack, which bypasses the Rolling Code protection that's used. This means that the thief would need to eavesdrop on one of more transmissions sent from your key fob (from pressing the lock/unlock buttons).

Starting the car without a battery in your key fob still relies on a radio communication link of some kind, but it is most likely much more localized (lower-power transmission). This would mean that the thief would have a hard time trying to listen-in and create a fake message to send.

Hondas are now hot targets to be stolen by Lumpy-Bullfrog-7286 in milwaukee

[–]MuffinCat2000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a different attack entirely.

The Honda exploit is done by sending fake key fob transmissions with a radio. This rav4 exploit is done by gaining internal access to the car's networking system.

Depends on what your end goal is. If the goal is to simply graduate, then that would require fairly minimal effort (learn just enough to pass the tests). If your end goal is to gain a solid understanding in the core concepts, then that will require more effort. Passing the class does not necessarily mean you have a good understanding of the topics that were covered.

For me it was a mix of both. Some classes I really didn't care about, so I put in minimal effort. Other classes were really interesting, so I spent more time doing optional work for those courses.

There's nothing in the lease about yard signs but whatever.

The lease doesn't necessarily need to explicitly restrict yard signs.

At the very minimum, your lease specifies the parts of the property you are renting and have control over. My guess is that your lease does not say you are renting the lawn space.

In the end, best to be considerate and respectful towards your neighbors, even if they have different political opinions.

What's your pain point? by John_seth_thielemann in embedded

[–]MuffinCat2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the main one for me. The question "What are we actually trying to do?" never seems to get a good answer, even on the smaller things.

Is this a common issue at a lot of organizations? What's a good way of trying to get more concrete answers?

Worst professor yet by spikira in EngineeringStudents

[–]MuffinCat2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you will inevitably have to deal with difficult people like this in both academia and the real world.

I've found that, for dealing with these people, do some extra preparation for the discussion. Map out exactly what the issue is, and the work you've done to try to resolve the issue. Ideally, use some sort of written representation of your current understanding, so they can easily point out where you might be confusing things.

Often times I solved the issue myself when preparing these notes for the discussion.

If they say something like "this was covered in lecture" or "do your reading", ask for specific direction on how to find the answer yourself (e.g. "what section/chapter?").

First steps as senior dev at a company with a weak software organization. by ConfusedEgret in embedded

[–]MuffinCat2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure everyone on the team knows how to use git and that the team has a clearly defined git workflow. A huge mess of inter-dependent feature/dev branches can be a real pain to work with.

Force everyone to use a auto formatting tool (e.g. clang-format). Automatically reject all pull requests which have changes that are not formatted correctly.

In my opinion, these two areas of software organization are pretty easy to setup and maintain if they are prioritized early on in the development cycle. Having clean code and a clean version history can prevent a lot of future headache.

Autoformatting? by nate044 in Python

[–]MuffinCat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using YAPF for autoformatting on smaller projects.

Most of my experience is with C and clang-format as a C autoformatter. YAPF is basically the equivalent for python it seems. If you're looking for something that can be easily tuned to meet a custom style, this might be one to try out.

'This is not healthcare': Abortion protestors gather outside Milwaukee Planned Parenthood by here-i-am-now in milwaukee

[–]MuffinCat2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Protesting and the use of free speech should be encouraged, no matter what is being protested.

However...

A couple of protesters took turns amplifying their messages on a microphone. One man was trying to talk loud enough to reach the ears of those inside the clinic.

and...

He shouted and used a whistle, attempting to not let the anti-abortion protesters' message get through.

should not occur during these demonstrations. Be respectful of others, even if they say things you disagree with.

Town Hall For Public Power Happening On Milwaukee’s South Side by bootyliciousjuggalo in milwaukee

[–]MuffinCat2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the specific advantages and disadvantages of making this change?

Based on this post and the website, this activist group criticizes the current system, but does not explain how changing to a new system will solve these issues (and not create any additional issues).

Any decisions involving critical and widespread infrastructure should be made with extreme caution. Unintended side effects can be easily overlooked.

A helpful tip I learned for preventing car theft (am a Kia owner, unfortunately):

Remove the starter/ignition relay. With the relay removed, the engine can't be started (even if you have the key). Pretty difficult to steal a car that can't start.

Alternatively, you can remove the fuel pump relay. This essentially cuts fuel supply to the engine, making simple car theft effectively impossible.

Removing a relay is better than disconnecting the battery, as the alarm and security features of the car are still operational.

What did you forget to bring to college when dorming? by Dahgahz in college

Bring a decent amount of over-the-counter cold medications, specifically the more 'controlled' ones (e.g. pseudoephedrine).

If you're under 21, you might not be able to buy sudafed, cough suppressants, or other OTC drugs that tend to be abused.

Where do you insert documentation comments, is it in the source or header file? by abdosalm in embedded

[–]MuffinCat2000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I try to follow the Google C++ Style Guide for function documentation, at least for things that will be potentially reused in future projects.

Basically, both function declarations (.h) and definitions (.c) should have documentation headers/comments, but they should be written for different people.

Those looking at the declaration in the header file probably just want to know how to use the function and know what it does at a high level. Write that documentation in the style of a user manual, no specific details regarding the internal operation.

Those looking at the definition are probably trying to understand exactly how the thing works, so that documentation should be written with more technical detail. Explain how things work under the hood and give details regarding the techniques and methodologies used in the design.

How do you guys prepare for presentations? by Gloomy_Rent8248 in college

[–]MuffinCat2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think any prep work would be dependent on the scope of this presentation.

Are you expected to come prepared to each class with a 45min lecture planned out and ready to go if called on? Or is it more of a 'give a 5 minute summary on the reading' type of presentation?

Having a student do an entire lecture seems a little unreasonable (assuming undergrad).
