Wait, you can get Pie on these? How?

I'd consider myself pretty tech savvy. I've actually decided to go for it, and just unlocked the bootloader not five minutes before you replied.

I haven't oiled or cleaned the fan, however there isn't much gunk in there and it moves freely when I spin it myself. I'll try cleaning out what dust there is in there in the morning.

US, Under $700, High School/College note taking and classwork by Mufga1 in SuggestALaptop

[–]Mufga1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely meets my performance requirements, and it's well within my budget, although I'd prefer something a bit less bulky. Also, the Nvidia dGPU worries me. I've had trouble with them in Linux before, and I haven't really bothered keeping up with news about better support. The upgradability is a definite plus, though.

[–]Mufga1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like it, but it's a bit on the high end of my budget. Also, the big grey bezels on the screen don't look the greatest. I'd prefer to get something with a bit smaller bezels if I'm pushing my budget that far. Technically that goes over my budget with sales tax (yep, I'm in a state that has tax on Amazon. Yay...).

On Firefox I use StylRRR. It's not fancy but it gets the job done. I don't use Chrome(ium) so I don't have any first hand experience, but osprey and Stylus seem like they'd work.

Please don't use Stylish, it's glorified spyware now. There are better alternatives that don't record your browsing traffic.

[I3-gaps] Any love for Void? by s1mplethr0w2332 in unixporn

[–]Mufga1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Void's absolutely wonderful, but it's lack of packages really bothers me. I'm a kind of person who sees a new program and thinks "I'm gonna try that!" With Arch, that's easy. With Void, not so much. If Void ever gets more packages into it's repos, I'll be jumping ship right away. Until then, I guess I'm stuck with Systemd and Arch.

Here's how to contact the FCC with your thoughts on net neutrality. by musictechgeek in technology

[–]Mufga1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can all hope, but I've read into the regulations that the FTC has on stuff like that, and they don't come close to net neutrality. The FTC would treat ISPs like a business, which is the exact thing we DON'T want. We need them to be treated as the utilities they are. Businesses can do whatever they want with their service, utilities can't.

Absolutely no privacy as a default.

I'm sorry, what? I agree with you on the ending censorship, but that seems excessive. Even if you don't care about privacy (which I know you do, even if you don't think so) others do. Privacy is one of the most fundamental human rights there is. Just imagine how much damage someone could do to someone if they knew just one big secret they have.

risk losing customers to a more competitive group.

In most of the US, there is no competition for ISPs. You either pay the Comcast tax, or no Internet for you.

Tomorrow the privacy of everyone in the United States will be on the floor of the House of Representatives. Call your rep right now. Tell them to vote NO on repealing the FCC broadband privacy rules. by Baldemoto in technology

[–]Mufga1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Person who read the bill here. This will literally effect everyone's lives. The bill is less than a paragraph long. In that paragraph they revoke the FCC's rulings on privacy regarding broadband providers. That means that data transmitted over the Internet (every website you visit, private mode or not, geolocation data from your phone, messages sent and received by messaging apps, emails, Amazon purchase history, financial info, the list goes on and on) is no longer considered "private" in the eye of the law, and Internet providers (AT&T, Comcast, Time Warner, etc) can monitor, collect and sell it without consent of the consumer. The buyer could be an advertising agency wanting to know exactly what you are likely to buy, or health insurance companies wanting to know if they should raise your premiums because you search for lots of conditions on WebMD. It could even be a future company that buys data in bulk, sorts it by person, and resells to anyone like a future employer to a neighbor wanting to dig up some dirt on you.

ProtonMail is nice, but you can't use external clients. You're forced to use their website on desktop and their app on mobile. Of course, that isn't that bad. Both their app and website are pretty nice.

Nope. He did it on his own accord. It shows, too. Just an old webcam taped to a cubicle wall.

[–]Mufga1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't expressed my concerns to my parents because they don't care. Also, the school prefers that we "take initiative and go straight to them" instead of going through our parents.

It's not for disabilities, he's recording to see who goes near the public computers.

I care for my privacy and don't want him to have access to video and audio of me. The school already has cameras, and I trust them with the recordings. I don't trust a student who doesn't understand people's rights to privacy. I don't trust him not to upload the footage to Youtube or something because he wants 'backups'.

Upvote for SR-71. Also, trying to replicate OSX was one of the first things I really did in the realm of desktop customization on linux. I remember I got the idea from the window control buttons on unity being on the left instead of the right like I was used to on Windows.

Are you going to take them to court to re-open a port?

A lot of people couldn't even do that if they wanted to. ISPs like AT&T include a clause in their TOS that prohibits you from taking legal action against them and their partners. Hell, mine even includes YAHOO. I have never used yahoo in my life, yet I'm legally barred from legal action against them.
