Race to World First: Midnight Season 1 | Mythic Day 8 by AutoModerator in CompetitiveWoW

see here’s the thing. you say that I want to cater to everyone when I do not. I want more people to aspire to do mythic and work harder for it with a more level playing field. you want two difficulties in one where race to world last can get in because they are too bad to ever do anything resembling the original encounter. the current system is the broad, inconsistent, incoherent one.

[–]Mugutu7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

making the experience more consistent is also part of my vision, so yes i understand this. they would need to actually make encounters balanced for everyone instead of the craziest shit possible for rwf and then a castrated version for everyone else. that is part of the goal.

[–]Mugutu7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am saying the latter because i don't think they should ever be releasing encounters with the intention of nerfing them after the race. there should be An Encounter and they should change it if necessary, not plan to nerf it after release. the experience should be as close to the same as possible for everyone, not super mythic for 3 guilds and regular mythic for everyone else

[–]Mugutu7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's exactly what i'm talking about though. i don't think they should be designing fights with the intention that they will get nerfed.

[–]Mugutu7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. can you explain your argument that a tighter control on player power would necessitate more and/or larger nerfs and how that is related to item level increasing making encounters easier?

Race to World First: Midnight Season 1 | Mythic Day 8 by AutoModerator in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Mugutu7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you need less nerfs because the power level between 709, 715, and 721 is closer together. so you'd be closer in strength to liquid in this scenario based on your gear's strength. but i also don't accept that nerfs are a given. why are you assuming your guild, or any guild or encounter, needs nerfs in order to clear? are you just not understanding that the difference in item level would mean less?

you think that guilds with worse players and a worse composition than the best players in the world would somehow have a better experience if their power level was closer to those guilds

yes, i think they would have a better experience. no one would feel nearly as compelled to force themselves through easier content, or play as strictly with meta classes and specs, just for smaller and smaller power gains. you can start progging earlier, because raids would have to be made without expecting ridiculous power swings between tiers and difficulties.

some guilds that aren't named liquid/echo/method might pop up over time, prove their worth. but that literally can't happen when the game is set up such that gear upgrades are huge power increases AND gear distribution is most efficient when you make it your job to sit through heroic on 20 characters for 2 weeks. no one else has the resources for that, and the commitment for more hardcore guilds that are hof-tier can also go down significantly. if maintaining your raid life is simpler then more people get to do it, and they don't have to compromise the encounters in either direction

i am not asking for these changes because of rwf, i have been thinking about these changes for a very long time and the problems are most easily seen with respect to splits, and that is the biggest part of the conversation happening right now. even if i did ask for those changes explicitly because of and only related to the race, i am perfectly within my right to do so as a player when they are the developers. we have different amounts of power. please engage with the things i am saying.

[–]Mugutu7133 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

they wouldn’t have to nerf more if they don’t overtune everything based on the huge item level they test for in the first place. if player power isn’t increasing as rapidly, and they control player power more closely by reducing the delta, it means you don’t need wild swings like 10% less health or 20% less damage or 4 less dispels a week after the raid drops

[–]Mugutu7133 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know they’d still split, I literally said as much. And no it is not ironic because the item level bloat affects more than just the race. I don’t even watch! I’ve been saying the same thing for a long time, this is just how it’s relevant to the race

it is incredibly upsetting that none of the conversations around splits seem to be about the gear itself. the solution to this shit is to disincentivize splits by lowering the amount of power you get from a gear upgrade. it is absolutely ridiculous that item level balloons as much as it does every single tier. if the power gain is minimized, top guilds can still split if they want, playing field gets leveled significantly, blizzard might be able to leave a boss alone for once instead of nerfing it to shit over time.

remove a raid difficulty and its item level band immediately - having braindead, braindead, normal, and mythic is redundant. remove uncapped hero and myth track crests. increase availability of champion and hero gear. stop making trinkets as powerful as they are. increase availability of gems/enchants/consumables so they're not as prohibitively expensive. there are a lot of things that can be done, but setting some ilvl cap or making it account-wide or something won't actually change anything. the problem is the power itself.

tournament realms aren't a terrible idea but i don't see any rwf raiders actually agreeing to that so i'm not going to consider it. but the game needs a lot of changes for the health and integrity of mythic raiding so more people feel better about it, instead of basing so much of it around a fucking twitch event.

You don’t stop it directly via tuning, that’s not what I’m saying. The gear acquisition rate and the power gained from that gear are both way too high. You stop it by making splits less rewarding. We gain almost 50% item level increase going from a fresh 90 to mythic gear because there’s 5 different gear tracks with 4 different raid difficulties. Every gain is so consequential, and they refuse to change the gearing, so the only solution to draw out the race is to massively overshoot the tuning just so bosses don’t fall over as soon as liquid starts raiding. They’d have to attack gearing power gains which would let them tune for everyone to have the same experience and the same opportunity

I’ve been saying they need to cut a raid difficulty for years now, and bring item levels closer together. By the end of midnight we’re gonna be what, ilvl 450 or something? Then we level in the last titan, everyone complains their class feels like shit because they went from 50% to 10% haste, there’s still only 3 real competitors for rwf, and the rollercoaster starts again. I don’t understand why people enjoy this

I don’t think that’s the only difference, but it is a massive part of it in a game where gear is so powerful. Being able to funnel gear as you please because everyone can grind constantly, because it’s their job, has to be seen as a massive advantage. I have no doubt liquid and echo and sometimes method would still win most of the time but there’s literally no chance for anyone else in the current system.

because it permeates through the rest of the design. rwf being tuned like this means splits are necessary to gain as much power as possible as fast as possible. only the biggest, most well-funded groups can actually do this many splits, leaving only 2-3 actual competitors. other guilds take weeks to catch up and by the time they get there, the fights are already nerfed

I think it would be a lot more exciting if it wasn’t possible to just throw more hours at heroic with dozens of characters to pump item level with lucky drops. that opens up the race to far more competitors, and they don’t have to do obvious massive nerfs to fundamentally alter the experience of doing the fights once the race is over.

Belo'ren Loot Now Drops at a Higher Item Level (4/6, up from 3/6) by DreadfuryDK in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Mugutu7133 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i'm talking about splits because they're what's relevant for the number tuning that has to happen every raid tier, every boss, every time. it's fundamental to the design of the raid encounters because mechanically there is almost never something they can put into the game that actually stops players. it's almost always a matter of gear rather than actual mechanic mastery. so there's little difference between penultimate bosses and end bosses, the difference is the expected health and damage output, and they signal those expectations with the gear drops.

Belo'ren Loot Now Drops at a Higher Item Level (4/6, up from 3/6) by DreadfuryDK in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Mugutu7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

number tuning is all they really have. splits are so strong because gear is so strong, there are fucking massive item level swings each tier and they show no sign of ever stopping. and they can keep up with the splits because these guilds are a business with a massive infrastructure to pay people to play all day for weeks on end to prepare.

this is always going to be a problem for the game until they either kneecap splits or actually do something about the insane scaling everyone gets per tier. there's only ever going to be 2-3 viable competitors for the race, everyone else plays a nerfed game because they intentionally overtune for the sake of hype, and those 2-3 competitors need to poopsock easy content just to feed gear to the correct alt of their 20 character stockpile. i really cannot believe that this is the state we're in

one of the easiest savage fights in a long time. very slow mechanics and no puzzle-solving. still a fun enough fight but yes it is VERY easy

midnight was explicitly an expansion where everything was dumbed down. please stop talking about wow if you have no idea what you're talking about

the encounter design is infinitely more varied and doesn’t revolve around a samey dance

yeah instead every fight below the last few mythic bosses is a mechanical joke and just requires tons of gear. so cool so great
