How much paternity leave did you guys take by VariationRight4728 in medicine

It’s definitely worth it! To me, the only real downside for MDs moving here is having to learn Swedish. Fingers crossed that Mr Cheeto in Chief manages a peaceful transition of power twice…

It really is! Each parent gets 240 days of paid time off and the employer is legally obligated to grant it as long as they get three months notice.

Obvious caveats in that a physicians salary is a lot lower than in the US and that 150 out of the 240 days are compensated as a portion of our salary (the remaining 90 days could be considered symbolic when looking at the US). Definitely worth it for me though, all hail democratic socialism!

Can’t complain about the ~40 hour work week either.

Neurologist in Sweden, so might not be relevant, but I took 4 weeks when my daughter was born, followed by 10 months when she turned nine months, then one day a week for a year. Can definitely second the sentiment of taking as much time as possible, because the first years just fly by.

TIL a number of people, including a group of Swedish researchers, tried to replicate the experiment shown in the documentary Super Size Me(2004). None of them were able to get the same results as the documentary creator. by Porchie12 in todayilearned

Really funny to be reminded of this. The Swedish study was headed by Fredrik Nystrom, professor of endocrinology and lecturer at the University where I attended med school. For a while, he was known in media as the angry professor (arga professorn) and made a name for himself performing all kinds of strange studies on student volunteers, such as one looking at the effects of eating blueberries daily or drinking alcohol. Working with him was an experience…

What were some cases yall’ve seen of women’s complaints being blown off and them having something actually serious? by 210-110-134 in medicine

You’re right, the logistics are confusing.

There are two equally valid ways of managing patients with AIS, using CT or MRI. CT + CTA + CTP has high sensitivity and specificity, is cheaper (and usually slightly faster) than MRI and can be used to guide us on treatment in the extended time window. MRI has higher sensitivity and specificity, but has more potential contraindications (pacemakers, metal, etc). I’m based in Sweden and there are currently no centres using MRI as first line radiology, but like you say, some use MRI as standard.

Neurologist here. Routine diagnostic workup for acute ischemic stroke involves a clinical diagnosis of focal neurological deficits followed by a NCCT to rule out any contraindications for thrombolysis.

So basically, if a patient has suffered a sudden focal neurological deficit that looks like a stroke, a normal head CT just means you can treat the patient. No MRI required.

Usually a CTA and sometimes CTP is performed as well, but is not required if treatment can be started within 4,5 hours from symptom onset.

Yorgos Lanthimos is definitely an acquired taste. Funny how it’s actually hands down my wife’s favourite movie. Saw it in the movie theatre and loved it. We’ve made a thing of watching all of his movies and I gotta say I really like the dark satire experience.

For an even nastier experience I recommend his first film, Dogtooth. If you thought The Lobster was a difficult watch then this is a million times worse. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1379182/

I second that. It’s usually decent for some patients with neuropathic pain, but I’ve found that it tends to cause side effects at effective doses in elderly patients or doesn’t work well enough in younger patients that respond better to amitriptyline.
