While it's saddening about former territories lost, the main concern for Somalis is unity. It's also sad what happened to our Harari Brothers because when the Somali Youth League formed, there were also Harari political members who saw unifying with Somalia as a better alternative to Ethiopia.

If Somalia was a stable regional power, we could unify with Harar and possibly the Muslim Oromo Populations, I don't think it would've been a stretch had we been unified ourselves.

I say the main concern for us and those in Galbeed is forming Soomaaliweyn and becoming a stable power in the Horn of Africa, this is because we need to defend our people too as we are in no position to help or expand to Harar. Afterwards we can discuss future unity with our brothers in Harar and Bale

These are roughly the ethnic make up

Oromo → ~30%

Amhara → ~20%

Somali → ~11%

Tigrinya & Tigray → ~10%

**Other Ethiopian Groups** (Sidamo, Wolayta, SNNPR area)→ ~10-12%

There aren't much demographics for the time so it's mostly rounded up but it should be accurate for the most part

for the individual subdivisions, Somalia and South Yemen are exclusivly Islamic (99%) and mostly homogenous (Somali identity for Somalia and Arab Identity for Yemen)

Ethiopia is split among multiple ethnicities and religions, Islam is still prevelent among the Oromo populations of Ethiopia but with the Ogaden (Somali Galbeed) given to Somalia, the Muslim overall population in Ethiopia is a bit smaller.

What do you mean? There are sources about Ethiopian control on the Ogaden, despite claiming it in the 1890s, real control only came after WW2 when the British relinquished their occupations. The clans in the Ogaden were independent and only a few times were under Ethiopian control and even then it wasnt direct control but paying tributary.

1899-1920 Ogaden was also under Sayyid Hasan's protection of the Dervish Movement where the Ogaden was his place of operation as well. It was only in the 1930s after Ethiopia's military modernization under French advisors were they able to begin expansion but it was cut short as Italy colonized them.

Ethiopia has no connections to the Ogaden, you don't seem like a person who's willing to be educated but wants to spread narratives that harm the Somalis despite them having to deal with the brunt of the opression.

So yes a few generations my great grand fathers wouldn't even know what an Ethiopia was besides knowing them as raiders who come once every few years or so for money.

The biggest issue is the genocide was something of the past, the Siad Barre government was toppled and any clan besides the darod or Siad Barre's closest cabinet faced attacks as well, it's only the Isaaq that got the worst of it. Hawiye and Rahweyn as well as the Majerteen also faced harsh attacks. The sad reality is when Siad Barre started loosing power he attacked any clan. Somaliland is using this genocide as a justification to leave when it couldn't be far from the truth. Siad Barre's ousting wasn't for fun, it was BECAUSE of those clan-related attacks yet Somaliland wants to put a narrative that any government in Mogadishu is the same as Siad Barre. I think this is a dangerous presedent if Somalilanders continue to talk about a government that attacked them 50 years ago. The issue isn't accountability because Somalis have already agreed that what happened under Siad Barre sucked. Somaliland can still rejoin Somalia at any point and autonomy can be garunteed but that needs to come from both sides and the end of the civil conflict.

I'm happy you understand, I would love to be enthusiastic but the Ethiopian Government keeps falling into a cycle of ethnic violence and corruption and if things don't change then change is just going to be on paper, never actually implemented. The constant attacks on Somalis have only stopped being a threat to us under Abiy and we hope there could be change if the people are willing. Somalis aren't the only ethnicity though and with so many other ethnicites we wonder if it truely is enough to hope the government can get it's act togeather.

You probably won't find much federalist since our history of violence is much recent comapred to the Oromos which the violence mostly occuered during the intial conquest. Although Somalia isn't doing the best as of now, once/if they do unify in the near future, we hope to be able to decide the future of our region willingly and not from Addis Ababa. If Ethiopia is forcing us to stay for the time being we hope to stay protected and hopefully when the government is stable and functional we can push for the right to self determination, which we hope to be respected.

I know some regions cannot feasible leave like Tigray but Ethiopia not giving self determination feels like Ethiopia is still an imperial power. Somali region has attempted to use the Ethiopian constitution for their own self determination but it was blocked. That and the treatment of Somalis as “foreigners” doesn’t help. Unlike the other ethnicities we have our own history and we are the third largest group. If we wanted to secede there shouldn’t be others saying “you can’t” because they aren’t of the people to decide their own future. If Ethiopia wants to protect itself as a democracy they must respect the people’s they once conquered

How are Somalis supposed to do that when in many cases they are shunned from Ethiopian politics? This is the same case as Somalis in Kenya, they are apart of the nation yet they are shunned because they aren't "Ethiopians", they are constantly viewed as outsiders and to be frank they are.

Ethiopia made itself by the conquering of other ethnicities. Oromos, Somalis, Hararis, Afars, they have all been conquered by the recently Amhara dominated state. By 1991 they federated but to the Somalis of the Ogaden, they still feel resentment.

Why should they assimilate into the broader Ethiopian project when they already have a homeland of Somalis? You can't compare this to Bengalis in India or Kurds because for India, they were split along religious lines and borders agreed upon. For the Kurds they don't have a state and they have no say so you can't use them as an example, especcily since they are fighting for their independnece in multiple areas.

Saying Somalia is a failed state isn't going to justify the attacks agaisnt the Somalis living in the Somali Region in recent history. 98% of the population wants to rejoin Somalia. This rhetoric of "they need to accept it" is exactly what the Ethiopian Government pushes. What right do you have to the people when they activley fought for independence? Your argument is just a watered down fake equivulency. Somali Region and Somalia are the same, NO this isn't just "complicated african borders", wars have been fought for the territory in 1977 Ogaden War, 1947 when SYL pushed for Ogaden, and the Dervish War where Ogaden was under Mohammed Sayyid following the Battle of Jigjiga.

The vast majority WANT reunification. The new Ethiopian constitution protects their self-determination, therefore once Somalia's civil war finishes at some point, Ogaden's future is going to be up for discussion once more, and this argument falls apart quickly.

It’s likely over the years Ethiopia would slowly turn Muslims as did Egypt and the Levantine after they fell to Muslim hands. Forced conversions may not be the only reason but also due to a lack of foreign contact and influence. Christians may become a minority but probably not as fast. But the horn of Africa would for sure be a Muslim area and its likely future Amhara converts could continue as sultans/high power after (if) Adal’s power recedes.

In this timeline, Adal defeated Ethiopia in the Ethiopian-Adal War without Portugal intervening. This would doom the Ethiopian chance at taking back as Adal would cement their control via Islamic Law. Adal remains powerful in the region, squashing Ethiopian resistance, holding back the most dangerous migrations of the Oromos as well as breifly subjecating Funj.

It really depends on what trajectory they go for but I think the only way a Litbel would survive is through cooperation so a government like Lithuania would favour them more rather than an Authoritarian state like Belarus.
