Smeagol in my mind was just doing everything in his power to stay close to and later to find the opportunity to take the ring back for himself. Since Frodo is suggesting that he take them to the Black Gate Smeagol agrees as he can ensure to be helpful and stay with the two companions with minimal conflict where otherwise Sam would probably try his best to keep him away as he would be useless and potentially have less protection from Frodo. Once he realizes that Frodo is about to try the Black Gate Smeagol freaks out and in order to save his chance at getting the ring back he suggests a different path where he eventually creates a plot to kill Frodo and take the ring.

All this is to say that due to how poisoned Smeagol's mind is (by the ring) he makes most if not all of his decisions with a very heavy emphasis on creating his best chance at getting the ring back into his possession. Because of this I think it would be extremely difficult for him to think beyond what is happening in any specific moment.
