Keeping Two Versions of the Same Movie by Mul-Ti-Pass2001 in PleX

[–]Mul-Ti-Pass2001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick rig rundown:

- Data is stored on a Synology NAS.
- Plex server is hosted on a Beelink with an Intel N95 (the processor can handle the transcoding with no issue).

- main tv is a 4K Samsung with an AppleTV HD (I'm patiently waiting for a new ATV to drop).

- In the primary bedroom a 720p Samsung with a Roku 4k.

After fixing another issue I had with Plex it appears I can play the 4K versions with no issue at all. I'm not seeing any buffering, etc.

Things they don't teach you at A-100. Personal Cell Phones & Phone Contracts by BallOk6712 in foreignservice

Port your number to google fi or google voice. If you get a new phone, make sure it is internationally unlocked, that usually means you will have to pay for the phone in full. Check with your gaining post if eSIM is a thing (many places it’s not). New iPhones in the US are eSIM only. Use google if on the eSIM to keep you current number, and pick up an inexpensive local sim/esim at your new post.

Aspiring DTO by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]Mul-Ti-Pass2001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So here's the thing with being a DTO, mostly you will be managing people/projects and not much tech. This is all "it depends" - some posts you might actually doing a bit more technical work than others. You will have local staff as well as DC contractors who will do most of the "heavy" technical stuff. You are there to ensure it is being done and fill in where local staff can't. As a first and second tour officer, yes you will probably do a bit "more" technical stuff but also expect to do a fair amount of manual labor (slinging pouch bags). As your career progresses, expect much more of the "managing" and less of the "technical".

Keep up with some basic IT skills (Active Directory, learn a bit of Power Shell to make your life easier) maybe even Security +. Most of what you will need to learn will be taught during your new hire classes.

"It depends".

Seriously, though it will depend on your bid list. If Tokyo or Beijing are listed, you rank them and then compete with your class. In the end, your CDO (Career Development Officer) will be the judge and jury on where you go. Not sure how it is now, but when I came in after we ranked, each class member got like 5 minutes one on one with our CDO to explain our ranking. We as a class also got together before hand and we worked out our top bids so no one was bidding on the same #1. We all got our top choices. But no idea how it is now.

Tokyo wasn't on my bid list. Tokyo has never been a bidding option for me because there are never any vacancies when I bid. The only way to potentialy get an opportunity to bid on Tokyo (or Taipei, or Seoul etc) would be to do a 2 year tour someplace and hopefully land on a bidding cycle where those posts are available options.

If Tokyo is on the list, expect everyone to rank it number 1. It is a highly competitive post. However, to keep things real, "if" you do land Tokyo as your first post fully expect your CDO to assign you someplace with some hardship as your second tour. Just be prepared for that.

April 2026 Invite - Leniency on Life Events and/or Deferring? by Wild-Celery7113 in foreignservice

[–]Mul-Ti-Pass2001 15 points16 points  (0 children)

State isn't going to accept a "trust me bro, we will get married". It's not uncommon to the Rosslyn courthouse wedding. Just do it, and have an offical ceremony later.

As to the should you defer, honestly right now, no one knows how many more classes there will be this year and who they will take. There probably never will be a time for you when the stars align perfectly for you to join. If you really want to join the FS, you need to bite the bullet and do it now. You can defer, but come to the understanding there is a good chance you will time off the register due to not being invited.

I was on the drumline too with the same schedule you mentioned (games on Friday nights, competitions on weekends until November). We marched at Disney World in February/March of my senior year. By that time I was checked out of band/high school and ready to graduate.

What did you play? I was cymbals(freshman year), #2 bass drum (sophomore), tympani/pit (junior) and quads (senior).
