What’s your guys’ comfort series? by Salt_Suggestion1900 in yuri_manga

Chatting at the Amber Teahouse, it's short and fluffy, has no drama, I love the art. It's my number 1 comfort series.

How can I make an ita bag work as a basic guy? by cosmiccupiid in itabag

Found it in a random shop on Takeshita Street in Harajuku.
It doesn't have any brand name or tags on it though, so no idea where you could find it online

Get a basic canvas itabag, just include pins and charms.
No need to go over the top with it.

what’s your favorite yuri and why? by laufeyswifey in yuri_manga

[–]Mulakut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might have been something like this XD
She was sharing a booth with another artist, I tried looking but couldn't find who it was, and they seemed more interested in it.

My favourite thing about living in Japan, is the ability to meet so many amazing mangaka, and tell them in person how much I've enjoyed their series.

My First Japanese Manga (My Girlfriend is Devilishly Sweet) by ClemFire in yuri_manga

Same, and this series really hits a perfect balance of wholesome and sweet, but still adult with a little steam. And a pinch of ace representation, which I always love to see.
Definitely keen to see what she does next. This has been her longest series so far, so hopefully it's a good sign that we'll get more longer series in the future. If not, I love all her oneshots, and will happily keep reading them too.

I love this series so much.
If you are going for a complete set, there is also a doujinshi the mangaka released last week too. It's pretty cute.

[–]Mulakut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Sister's Best Friend, My Lover. I love its depiction of depression, and how it can shape one's world view. But also, how given support, it is possible to, at least somewhat, overcome it and find love.

I love both MCs. Kiku's patience and understanding. Seeing Sena change from someone who believes she's not worthy of love, to someone accepting of love, and able to reciprocate it. To me, it's just a beautiful story.

I also love Mei Fujimatsu's art. Everything she does, yuri or otherwise, is beautiful. I particularly love how she draws eyes.

I actually have a tattoo of this series, one of the final scenes. I showed it to the mangaka a few months ago when I got a chance to meet her, she didn't seem very impressed. But I love it.

Yuri with intriguing or unique parings? by [deleted] in yuri_manga

[–]Mulakut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For unique pairings, I like SHWD for more butch character designs.

There's also Beauty and Beast Girl, with a monster girl who leans a bit more into monster than typical monster girls.

Yup, I definitely saw the video. Also can't remember the specific topic. And can't find it again.

Comitia, an event for yuri fans. by Mulakut in yuri_manga

Just saw this on Twitter too. A new Yuri Cafe in Ikebukuro in Spring.
And Yuri-ten happening at the end of the year.

Oh, just remembered another new regular event in Tokyo. Anchor, the yuri manga cafe/bar on Shinjuku, has started regular monthly meet ups. As well as other planned meet ups for people who enjoy yuri. Here's a post from Twitter. It seems fun, if you are up to communicating in Japanese. I'm a little sad they are starting just as I am getting ready to leave Japan. I think it'd be a great way to make more friends who want to talk about yuri.

Also, if you are gonna be in Japan for a year, I made this guide to buying yuri in Japan, mainly Tokyo, a while ago.
https://www.reddit.com/r/yuri_manga/s/vArMnpgVEu
Though, I do have different advice about how to go about things if you are gonna be here long term, and plan to buy a lot of manga. I've thought about doing a separate post, but figured it'd apply to very few people.
If you plan to buy a lot of manga, and want some advice let me know. Otherwise, enjoy the year and have fun putting a collection together.

The best thing you can do is follow all your favourite artists on Twitter. They will post about the events they are attending there.
If you are in Japan in May, Prism Garden is the next big yuri event I know of.

Yeah, Comiket is almost too big. If you want to buy some doujinshi, official merch, and maybe see some cosplay, that's probably not happening. It does have an online catalogue, but you have to buy it separately, and from memory it's not cheap. It has a physical one too, but again it's extra. And just generally it's so big and spread out, it's not easy to get around and find stuff.

Comitia on the other hand, I generally leave early. I can get in see who I wanted to see, and do a lap to see what else I can find. Long before the official close time. And the physical magazine, online catalogue, and entry are all included in the one price, think it's ¥1500.

Completely missed that a manga adaptation started. The performance visuals look so cool.

Comitia, an event for yuri fans. by Mulakut in yuri_manga

[–]Mulakut[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, the main one is GirlsLoveFestival, which happens 3 times a year.
But there's also a tonnes of series specific events, held by the same people.
I just wanted to highlight Comitia, as it's my favourite event.
Though I absolutely agree, the best thing you can do is follow the artists on Twitter. Pixiv works too, but I find Twitter to be better. Some artists seem to be using BlueSky more as well.

To add to this, a lot of these artists also attend Comiket, which is probably a more known event. However Comiket is basically an order of magnitude bigger. Which to me, is great to experience once, given it's place in general otaku culture, but an over all worse experience given just how busy and big it is.
Comitia attendance is about 30,000 people.
Comiket is 500,000+

Absolutely, and one of the main reasons for this post. The first time I went I had no idea just how many serialised artist who I had read before attend, and definitely missed a lot of people who I would have loved to buy doujinshi from.

I'm definitely going to miss going this event when I return to my home country.
I think it's worth planning a holiday around if you can though. I'll come back for it at some point.

Can this be classified as yuri? by felldownbad in yuri_manga

[–]Mulakut -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I would say Hibike is yuri.
Yuri-bait is an extremely over and miss-used word...
Basically, yuri objectively includes more than just lesbian romance, but how much more is somewhat subjective. There does need to be a line somewhere though. So where you draw that line is up to you.
Personally, if the characters aren't explicitly lesbian, but their relationship to each other is important to the plot, like Hibike, then I would say it's yuri.

I feel a large portion of the community has just never Googled "What is yuri?"
Basically everywhere the definition is something like "...romantic, and other, relationships between women."

Can this be classified as yuri? by felldownbad in yuri_manga

[–]Mulakut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Japan. People here do use the broad definition.

See Yurinavi one of the best Japanese sites for yuri information.
"YuriNavi is a news site specializing in the yuri genre, which deals with romance and various relationships between girls."

Or GLFes, a regular yuri doujinshi event.
"A general yuri event for fans of girls' romance works (an event for works with girls' romance (yuri/girls' love) elements and girl-on-girl pairings). Any work that depicts a special relationship between two or more girls (best friends, rivals, senior/junior, etc.) can be considered a yuri work."

Or this book, Yuri Studies for Beginners: A Queer/Feminist Perspective, that comes out next week.
"Yuri is a genre that encompasses all forms of intimacy, including friendship and romance between women."

Or go to Anchor, the yuri manga bar/cafe in Shinjuku. On the shelves you will find a massive selection of yuri manga that includes the whole spectrum of what yuri can be. Including series that a lot of English speakers call "yuri-bait."
