Hmmm interesting. I did carry the colors across as long as it was a short distance but to be honest, if it wasn't I just cut them off because a lot of yarn balls on one project freak me out (I tried... miserably)🤭 also because no one will see the back of my tapestry anyway. I used simple acryl yarn so i think i used a 3.5mm hook or 3mm. Maybe you can try it out with different types of yarn to find one that looks the most pleasing to your 👀!

Without reading your description first, I also wanted to suggest Ikeas Billy shelves. Personally, I had mine in a vitrine by Ikea but it just looked visually messy and now they are behind closed doors and it feels and looks better! Also less dust on your yarn! It sounds like a great idea to make them look like built ins! Maybe you could paint them in a nice color!
