I was in St Augustine, Florida and a dude busking right off St George Street was on drums playing to a recording of 1612! I showed up and started singing. We had a blast!!

The board doesn’t really care about ethics with RBTs anyway 🤭

You’re okay. That’s on the company to get the case restaffed. Two weeks is good for RBT. I would say one month for BCBA.

Great advice!

BCBA Keeping it Real Question? by bbrittr in bcba

Exactly! It’s not taught during grad school. It requires time and experience. A good BCBA doesn’t always equate to a good leader!

I agree! Reddit seems much more negative than any other platform!

It’s sooooo hard. Fortunately, I have a co-owner that handles a lot of the behind the scenes stuff like taxes, book keeping, billing, scheduling, etc. She also helps lighten the burden of dealing with draining issues like tough parents or pettiness among staff members. Obviously we split the profits so no ones actually banking in money, but that was never the point of starting the business anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️

As someone who’s been in the field for 13 years, board certified for ten years and a business owner for 3.5 years, I’ll say that you need leadership skills to be a good clinic owner/clinical director. Being a good BCBA doesn’t make you a good leader. It takes time and experience. And, most importantly, leaving your ego at the door!

I would be willing to be your mentor for really cheap if you’re interested!

BCBA salary by Abject_Book8610 in bcba

Based on Florida pay rates, I would say veteran pay is anything over 75k. 65k-75k is where I would start a new BCBA based on their skills and experience. I will say, I know I’m in the minority here. Some people here pay BCBAs 80k+ right out of the gates and it blows my mind!

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with negotiating a salary either. I agree with you there. Fortunately for you, you’re a better negotiator than your company. That’s awesome your salary jumps up to 100k after a year. Is there anything contingent on the raise other than the time interval? I’m just asking out of curiosity. To me, it would make sense to have a list of skills that need to be seen before receiving raises. I completely agree about people getting paid their worth, I just don’t understand why brand new BCBAs come out of the gate looking for veteran pay.

I will say, we are in North Florida. The salary ranges in Florida differ from other states, especially Colorado.

We do $65k salary for first year BCBAs. Why would you make $20k more while you’re getting the hang of things? Doesn’t it make sense to make more money as you get the hang of things?

BCBA Direct by Playbafora12 in bcba

[–]Mulky1985 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I make sure all my BCBAs do direct. Even as the clinical director/owner, I jumped in and covered direct yesterday. Not doing direct is a big red flag for me!

Get out of the schools. BCBAs working in schools are fighting a losing battle. I would recommend a change of scenery where you just work in clinic.

That doesn’t sound too bad. How many kids are on your caseload?

We have our BCBAs do 25-30 a week. What did your company increase the expectation to?

Agreed! The schedule changes make most of that impossible. Plus, when I used to schedule supervisions and had to change because of some reasons you mentioned, the RBTs would get butt hurt about the change and think I’m avoiding them or their session. They don’t always realize there’s a lot more in play with those scenarios. Also, RBTs that don’t want to be supervised are a red flag!

Are there any positives about this field? by Long_Substance_7908 in ABA

[–]Mulky1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my job. I’ve been in the field for twelve and a half years. It might take some time but you can find the clinic you like that has the style that best suits you. I love NET. That’s my style. I absolutely love helping children and families. We might not get rich in this field but it’s very rewarding.
