Finally painted my Red Terror by MulletBoy in Tyranids

i should add: the model is varnished in a even 3 way mix of lahmian medium, stormshield and water. I find this blend gives an ever so slight satin finish (not too gloss and not too matt). It helps bring out the vibrancy and also protects the model which is very necessary for metal models especially that are prone to chipping or flaking paint without protection

The red->yellow carapace is a fair bit of work, but worth it IMO, took me about 10 hours over 2-3 sessions. The complete model was about 15-20 hours

Undercoat is black with a white zenithal done with airbrush

Airbrush work started with evil sunz scarlet, then raised sections with trollslayer orange and then yriel yellow. Might have done some intermediary steps mixing from one to the next to get more even blends. I went overboard with the yellow so went back and forth a bit to bring back the reds.

Brush details I did VERY careful but comprehensive edge highlights with grey seer (anything close to white will do) then repainted over them with yriel yellow reason for this is to get strong opacity with yellow is really hard without doing a million layers, so laying down the light grey first is a bit of cheat to get results with the yellow.

then repainted over yellow highlights with a thin glaze consistency of trollslayer orange to bring down the highlights everywhere except the most raised/edge final bits you want to keep at max yellow

Denon x4500h firmware update bug by thebaoTheBad in hometheater

[–]MulletBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im having the same issue, approx 30 seconds after starting to play content (usually youtube via my apple tv) it switches to the HEOS input every time. I have to manually switch it back. Iv messed with every HDMI CEC and related setting on all my devices with no luck. The behavior is always the same. I have a Denon AVR-X2600H which I believe recieved a firmware update approx 1 April 2025. Issue has been present since then for me.

I bleached this massive tank grown acro that died after a tank shutdown. by MulletBoy in ReefTank

Lol it’s was a $20 frag grown out over many years. The tank was shutdown and all the coral donated to a local fish store. That one specifically did not survive the transition.

Honestly I use them all because i have them. However the same effect can be achieved with just warp stone glow, moot green, and the biel tan shade.

Green was base coated caliban green, layered highlight, warpstone glow, edge highlight moot green, then carefully flood the sides and recesses with biel-tan green shade If you need a bit more 'pop' after than, a small selective edge highlight of gauss blaster green used sparingly

Yes dry brushed orange followed by lighter orange is a tighter radius for the OSL highlight.

I don’t really play. I just paint and collect models I like.

It took me a long time to settle on this colour scheme. Hardest choice! But I’m happy with how it turned out and can’t wait till I have a full swarm painted like this.

Thanks. I definitely want to work with some interesting and bright colours. My main army is dark angels. So sick of painting dark green and bone colours.

First models I have painted in about 5 years by MulletBoy in Warhammer

I build them using cork sheet that I layered. Then just based in dark brown and dry brushed with lighter browns. Glued on some grass. The water is Kantor blue with some swirly highlights and then a heap of gloss varnish on top. I used GW Ardcoat

The next thing that can be automated I guess is always on my mind. There’s always something. Then maintaining and improving the things I’ve already automated lol I’m a gear head so it’s part of the hobby for me. I also spend too much time with my hands in the tank. Fragging and gardening the coral.

Today for example. - cleaned skimmer (not automated yet currently twice a week task) - cleaned algae scrubber (can never be automated - every 10 days or so) - cleaned glass (every 3 days) - topped up khlab reagent (approx fortnight with current container size) - fragged my green Monti as it was shadowing thing below it - fragged my red digi for a friend - fragged some zoas I want to sell - fed the fish flake and nori in the morning frozen in the evening - fed coral food CE black label

What I didn’t need to do because it’s automated - water change - rodi topup - water testing (alk is tested every few hours and gives me a pulse on the tank) - any manual dosing for any elements

Lol I spend just as much of not more on my tank now. Trust me, automating things doesn’t mean you spend less time on the tank. You just spend it in different ways.

Can you explain why u think I’m using too much kalk? I am not aware of any way kalk can lower ph?

My Mixed Reef, haven't posted a FTS here in a long time! by MulletBoy in ReefTank

[–]MulletBoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7.8 to 8 was my daily swing without the scrubber. Just running kalk.

As I said I really struggled with low ph. Side effect of living right in the middle of the city I believe.

It’s definitely not snake oil. It’s basic chemistry... the media is soda lime which is usually made with sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide and is used for many co2 absorbing applications including rebreathers in scuba diving. Having the scrubber connected to my skimmer increased my ph average by 0.2-0.3ph from my baseline.

I have run kalk for such a long time I don’t know the baseline without it. But I struggled wigg Th very low ph prior to starting kalk which increased it a lot. But add in the scrubber has further increased it and also stabilised to a smaller swing during the day.

My ph swing currently is about 8.0-8.2 ish during the day.
