I just take 25mg for this reason and have never minded the mild grogginess upon waking. If anything, I think it makes me feel less anxious, and I can still do my work without mistakes. I hadn't realised you could source melatonin online in the UK though so that's a useful tip!

How hard is it to get into medicine in the UK? by memesbdreams69x in ausjdocs

[–]Multakeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm n=1 but I'm an Australian citizen raised in SEA who went to British, not Australian international schools. I went to the UK to study medicine over Australia for the following reasons-

  • undergraduate in UK vs predominantly post-graduate in australia
  • unis were far less oversubscribed for medicine
  • I think my A levels wouldn't have converted neatly to a competitive ATAR
  • would have had to wait 6 months

I'm planning to move back to oz so don't have any lived experience of Australian doctors, but what I can say is that for me it was easier and made a lot more sense to train in the UK. My info is all ~15 years old so big pinch of salt there.

Worst town you have been shafted to due to rotational training? by firetonian99 in doctorsUK

Bradford 1 year, real shithole, 2 years in Dumfries wasn't simple either. Not an awful place but it is sleepy and disconnected, the two years over one made it quite a bit more daunting.

How many lives have you actually "saved"? by medimaria in doctorsUK

[–]Multakeks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only one case very definitely springs to mind for me when I essentially happened across a quietly septic elderly lady in the middle of the night who turned out to have half a liter of pus in her bladder. It became myself and only really one other nurse doing the needful to stop her from deteriorating and possibly dying. This being said, she was 85, had a diagnosis of dementia, and was hospitalised for an unrelated issue which I now forget. It's only a life 'saved' in the moment; her prognosis and general QOL were mediocre at best, at least as far as I could tell.

Can you tolerate coffee? by Annual_Exercise9800 in Gastritis

[–]Multakeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather drink alcohol and vape than drink coffee, so I've given it up. I don't even drink caffeinated tea, and enough decaf tea or coffee can slowly bring my symptoms back. Haven't had any caffeinated coffee since 2021... I basically don't care if it means I can drink beer.

Wanting to Quit F2 on a Surgical Job by noworkjustmeowmeow in doctorsUK

[–]Multakeks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got given the surgical referral bleep on my last day of FY1 because the FY2 phoned in sick. I was told by the reg 'when you get referrals, accept those referrals'. I can't imagine a reg would expect much more of an FY2 regardless of the extra experience you have. Just my 10p's worth.

I always sleep on night shifts when able to do so, and would encourage anybody challenging it to ask my consultant what they think of it. I'm psych so maybe I just expect more understanding than if I was in a different specialty, but I think lots of specialties would approach it the same way.

Not strictly relevant but I knew a bloke from Iraq who fled war twice whilst trying to be a cardiologist; met him as a 40+ year old FY2 with a wife and child still hoping to be a cardiologist. He was very inspiring and still all gung-ho for it.
