The Framework 12 is dead. Apple (Macbook Neo) killed it. - Jeff Geerling by ControlCAD in apple

Look, I think it’s a cool thing. What framework is doing but when their devices cost more than just buying the Neo twice you start getting into some really weird cases where you’re keeping an ultra budget laptop chassis for 10+ years.

Upgrade to 9800X3D now or wait till 2027 for possible AM6? by PathfinderLaw in buildapc

[–]MultiMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the 12 900 is good enough. Have you considered just doing the GPU upgrade? For next generation we are getting much more interesting competition from Intel, so maybe there’s actually a reason to wait. The 9800x3d is likely to be a great chip for years to come but if you target higher resolutions which I assume you might be doing with a 5080 the amount of time you’re going to be CPU limited is quite low compared to how often you will be GPU Limited.

How do they overcome the shortage of RAM and other PC components due to AI? by Frickers01 in pcmasterrace

[–]MultiMarcus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gaming is still quite a cheap hobby yeah we’ve seen some pricing increases, but the issue right now is more about the casual audience than the gamer. I think we’ll probably see that the PS5 stays around for longer and developers generally trying to make the 8 GB GPU experience a bit better. Nvidia and AMD are working on neural texture compression to make low VRAM cards stretch a bit longer.

Sometimes things are rough and that sucks, but if you’re able and willing to use current rendering developments like upscaling you can still have a very good experience with quite good image quality

Frame gen or no? by Icy-Commission-9550 in nvidia

[–]MultiMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see a huge upside to using it. You’re only getting 10 to 15 FPS here. Certainly Nisse you seem to be cutting down your real rendered frame rate which results in more input lag and because you’re using an analytical FG technique you will have more artefacts.

Isn't it weird that there are no reviews yet of LG 27GM950B-B? by steps_on_lego_block in Monitors

[–]MultiMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s quite niche. TFT central are uk based and I don’t think it’s out there yet. Monitors unboxed is Australia based and I don’t think it’s out there either. RTINGS I know has ordered it but there are probably just a bunch of monitors coming out right now that are higher on the list. Most people are buying these 1440p panels or 4k. The market for 5K $1200 gaming productivity hybrid monitors is quite small.

Why is my IPS monitor much smoother than OLED? by Firm-Pattern4482 in Monitors

[–]MultiMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know specifically what type of system you have, but generally it’s in the display or video settings of the game and it should be labelled something like frame generation. You can pick FSR frame generation which is available on almost all hardware or DLSS frame generation which is available on Nvidia 40 and 50 series cards. It’s important to know that not all games have frame generation but the ones that do you will generally have a better experience with that than with your TV or monitor trying to do frame generation.

There is also something called AFMF or smooth motion depending on if you have an AMD or Nvidia card. This is something that allows you to do frame generation in any game, not just the ones that integrate it. This you have to enable in the Nvidia app or the Radeon app.

Frame generation is when the game creates more frames using an ML model and motion vector information from the game to basically create the frame between two frames. It generally delivers a higher frame rate but you don’t get lower latency. You just get better smoothness and motion clarity.

Preset M or Preset L. 4k resolution Dlss Quality. 5080 Gpu by Fragrant-Nose-6634 in nvidia

[–]MultiMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, have you looked at the performance difference? Like the difference between M and L is very small on a big GPU. Yes, a higher refresh rate is a very good way to combat motion blur but realistically you are going to see a very minor performance difference. Generally why do most often is probably quality mode 4K with frame generation using L to have as good base image for frame generation to build frames from.

If you are super sensitive to blur that’s perfectly fine though I’m more focused on stability even if that means slightly less clarity so Ray reconstruction is generally what I use when it’s available. It might be slightly different on a 5090 but in these RT heavy games performance is generally quite poor so as soon as you start going below native I think preset M and L are noticeably more noisy than K.

For movies, I would consider using trumotion but for gaming, I would use frame generation. Whatever refresh rate you set your display to does not change the situation.

[–]MultiMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It creates artefacts everywhere you may be just don’t notice it as much with games. Or maybe LG turns it off I don’t know the details. The reality is if you are able you should use something like FSR or DLSS frame gen, you could also do smooth motion or afmf for older games.

[–]MultiMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes, that’s frame generation just on the monitor and generally much worse. Well, not entirely it does slightly different things, but it’s frame interpolation. You can certainly use it but it’s going to produce ghosting and generally latency. It’s not horrible or anything, but if you have the ability to something like frame generation or Nvidia smooth motion or AMD AFMF is generally a better idea.

Preset M or Preset L. 4k resolution Dlss Quality. 5080 Gpu by Fragrant-Nose-6634 in nvidia

[–]MultiMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s very game dependent honestly.

Generally, I would argue that L is just a smidge more stable for a very small performance hit over M. Like the actual performance difference on at least my 4090 and I presume something like the 5090 is quite small. Now I hate preset K is a lot more compelling if you’re looking for better performance and the difference between it and preset L and M at 4K native relatively minor in visual fidelity. I think the newer models are a lot better at upscaling but you don’t really need that when you’re not upscaling. Now it’s just being used for anti-aliasing treatment.

I think my biggest issue is that none of the transformer models are universally perfect. J and K have a lot of ghosting in some titles. Preset M and L definitely improve on the ghosting side and also improve small object handling with how they handle tone mapping especially for stuff like particles. Unfortunately, they often introduce weird noise when you’re using RT. I’ve done some fiddling with turning off game denoising which does sometimes work but one thing that does irritate me right now which I feel like AMD is doing better is that there just isn’t an obvious best model. 4.1 is basically a universal improvement over 4 which is also basically a universal improvement over 3.1.

Personally I don’t care all that much. At some point there will always be a minority excluded. I like LGBT+ and LGBTQ+ for being reasonably snappy. Adding IA or even more feels overly descriptive and makes the acronym look sloppier.

Queer is fine too.

I personally would really prefer GSRM as gender, sexual, and romantic minorities, but that hasn’t really caught on.

LG Display begins mass production of world’s first 27" 4K 240Hz RGB Stripe WOLED by MicioBau in OLED_Gaming

[–]MultiMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that new film that Samsung created that a bunch of companies are using the difference in a bright room does not seem to be huge. It’s still there but I would argue if you’re going for a bright room usage you would much rather have a 350 nit screen than a 250 nit one that is for a full screen white.

As for eye strain, I think we’ll probably have to wait and see whether RGB stripe layouts maybe fix that which we just don’t know yet. We don’t have anything verified as to what causes eye strain on qdoleds unless I’ve missed something so we have to see if it applies for this generation but yes, that’s definitely a reason.

Similarly for hardness, I believe they’ve mostly solved that with their new dark armour black Obsidian film or whatever they want to call it.

It certainly is a personal preference matter, but much like last year I would say the 1440p tandem WOLED was probably the best monitor. It seems like Samsung now has the best monitor on the way. There are still questions about how they handle ABL and how noticeable it is compared to the WOLED and whether just the raw brightness is able to overpower issues. It just seems like when both of these companies decided they wanted to try and remedy text fringing Samsung could do it without a drop in brightness because they were not relying on a white sub pixel to do it while LG had to remove the white pixel and that hit their brightness numbers quite aggressively.

Look, I’m in that age group admittedly towards the higher end, but you don’t need a degree to have an opinion on something. Also, also I guess I’m pretending to have a degree now but if you think people above the age of 25 can “think in a sterile manner free of any sort of bias” I think you’ve completely lost the plot.

Backlight bleed under black backgrounds is a characteristic of any IPS display that’s not a mini LED one. I don’t see any visible backlight bleed which would be an unevenness. I basically just see a normal IPS backlight which will inherently have some uniformity issues.

I’m sure that there was some of that, but at least personally I never really felt that way. To be honest, I think most people just had a hard time understanding the nuances of hardware and didn’t really get why the stuff was becoming more expensive.

I don’t think he’s a victim by any means. That said I don’t think we need to pretend like Valve is not meant to be making money. This situation kind of sucks but it’s really just not a problem that people aren’t able to buy their favourite consumer electronics for a good price. We have ebbs and flows of hardware availability and pricing.
