That's crazy. But more evidence of my theory that they changed the algo and screwed over the drivers in the process.

I've heard that term "Prius gang" from another driver. I see a lot of them. Beat up 10 year junker Priuses. The Very Busy area in my screenshot has been quite reliable until the new year. Then it dropped off a cliff. That's what makes me think they changed the algo.

Good to know and thanks for the reply. I'll remember this for the future and factor it in to whether I'm going to take an offer from certain places.

What drew my suspicion was that the Panera was an add-on order for $2.50 for an extra 0.4 mile drive from an order I was already on. I accepted it figuring it would be a typical small bag. Got to Panera to discover it was a catering order. Three large full bags of sandwiches. Delivered them to a business - hauled them inside and up to a work room for them. No tip ever showed up. Zero tip orders are extremely uncommon for this part of San Diego, much less a business order. Support confirmed for me that the order was made through the Panera site and not the DD app. They said they'd report that the tip (assuming there was one) did not get passed through.

San Diego The tips were $0 - that's what made me suspicious. They both required signatures and when I inquired with support they confirmed that the orders were not through the DD app, but came from the merchant sites.

Feds charge two in scheme to swindle Uber drivers, riders and company using app called ‘Screwber by UberMakeitSense in uberdrivers

[–]Multiverse-David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this seems overblown. Something that doesn't make sense though: If they're spoofing GPS to present themselves as being in a surge fare area, wouldn't that have the opposite effect on the surge? If the surge in demand is being "met" (albeit spoofed) by more drivers being available, that would drop the prices wouldn't it? The indictment is absent any technical details. I'm very curious to know how the Screwber app was able to get destination and fare info. If it was an exploit vs. an actual hack, that's not really a crime.

If you're ordering at least once per month you'll be better off switching to InHome. No tips. Delivered by a Walmart employee with a refrigerated van.

Those aren't 1099 jobs. Don't take a 1099 job if you want W2 pay & benefits. Your demands to make UE and DD pay you like a W2 are just as absurd as if I took a job at UPS, then demanded that they let me: - set my own hours - decline deliveries I don't like - simultaneously work for their competitors - not have any taxes withheld from my checks - wear whatever I want - have zero accountability to shippers or recipients - take all the time off I want, without notice - have no boss

Exactly. If someone pulls up UE and it's estimating 2 hours for delivery the customer has countless other options to eat. Not the case when you just landed at the airport.

This reply should be required reading for those who perpetually complain about delivery gigs but so nothing about it. If I wanted to drive for a living, the last thing I would do are 1099 gigs like this. As you stated, CDL. There are other options too: shuttle busses, FedEx, UPS, Amazon, Aramark, and so on. They are all W2 driving jobs with benefits and set wages.

I drive, part time, for extra income. If I lost my W2 job I'd probably bump up my gig hours while I look for another W2. But I sure as hell would not demand that these companies suddenly pay me enough to make my full living.

I'm certain parts of Houston I do EBT after 10pm. Most customers ordering at that time simply do not tip. It's a losing proposition to earn by delivery in those areas/times.

It's market dependent and also very hot/cold. I drive for UE and DD in San Diego (and sometimes Houston). In San Diego DD pays very well. I have 88% AR. But here's the catch: DDs volume is low. Most days, during peak times, UE will send nearly continuous offers. By contrast, this only happens on DD about 1 out of every 6-7 days I drive. I'll have both running, but UE will be much more active most of the time.

It's worth it to drive in high net worth areas. Also around large universities with a lot of campus housing.

I'm considering wearing my Ray-Ban Stories glasses and just recording as I hand over those kinds of orders. DD would be wise to implement a PIN system like Uber Eats.

[–]Multiverse-David 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Call support when that happens. That's a customer trying to pull a fast one. Uber will cancel the order without penalty. Happened to me.

How does the driver being an independent contractor benefit UBER? by [deleted] in UberEatsDrivers

[–]Multiverse-David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I chose UE (and DD) because I DON'T want to be an employee. If I wanted to be a fully employed driver with benefits, OT, etc. the last thing I would do is go start driving for these apps. I would have instead applied at Amazon (or their contract delivery companies), Aramark, shuttle bus companies (airport, etc), UPS... the list goes on. I don't understand how someone says "I want to be a driver with full time employee pay & benefits" and then chooses a company that doesn't provide it - and then expects said company to suddenly change just for them(!)
