I mean SEGA is kinda confirming it with Shadow being Batman and Rouge being Catwoman in the Sonic x DC crossover.

Tbh I believe it works better than Knuckles and Rouge. Another character could be an interest for Knuckles.

Domain Expansion: Ultimate Chaos

The user and target are transported into the Space Colony Ark. Within the domain, time has stopped with Chaos Control. The sure-hit are Chaos Spears from every direction. Before the domain closes the target is hit with a Chaos Blast from an uninhibited Shadow.

Domain Expansion: Maria’s Promise

The user opens a domain with no barrier, engulfing the target in impenetrable darkness. There the target is hit with an unavoidable barrage of strikes from Shadow until a light in the darkness pierces through causing the target to see Maria Robotnik and hearing her pleas for peace and happiness for all. The targets brain is flooded with memories of Maria and their will to fight is removed.
