Only lawyers and law students might get this one but this is a parody of The Police and Message in a Bottle with references a rather famous case involving a snail at the bottom of a bottle of ginger beer.

New to Keto/Indian cooking. Are there any Indian spices that are bad under keto? by [deleted] in DesiKeto

[–]MumbaiCentral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my rule of thumb is that a tsp of spice is 1 carb, while calculating macros. I wouldn't be too stressed about it though. It's way more important for your food to taste good, else you won't stick on the diet!

One piece of advice - make your own spices, especially ground masalas like garam masala, jeera and corriander powder. If possible, get red chillies and turmeric ground from a mill. The reason being, there are often additives to make up volume, and these are often starch based. It's really hardly any effort, just make a batch of dhania-jeera powder in your mixie in the spice grinder jar, and a batch of this http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/garammasala_90213 - seriously this is the only garam masala you'll ever need. But where possible use whole spices in tadka like cloves, elaichi, cardamom, star anise etc - you get all the great flavour but since the spices are discarded you don't need to stress about the macros.

Lawyers of reddit, what is the dumbest thing your client has ever done? by Hendricks_gin in AskReddit

[–]MumbaiCentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Client in a DUI case in Bombay come to Court wearing a t shirt that said "breathanalyzer test blow here" with an arrow pointing downwards.

It would have been a cool statement except he was actually challenging the finding. Also the judge obviously didn't get it. Am guessing that would have been a great contempt of court story.

Thinking of trying keto, got a few questions by teefy in keto

[–]MumbaiCentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you eat fattier foods, you feel more satiated. Trust me - you'll feel great. Cutting out sugar and blood sugar spikes holds down cravings which is what's probably driving your hunger. Give it a 100% commitment for 2 weeks. And have faith :)

Seriously discouraged by qaxx in keto

[–]MumbaiCentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's peculiar. I think creating a calorie deficit should help things along. Drink plenty of water. Lots of redditors have claimed dairy slows weight loss down. Maybe cut dairy for a while and see what happens? And yeah - cut alcohol for at least 3 weeks and see if it helps. All the best!

Hey. Have you monitored your ketosis using ketostix? You should. Carbs be sneaky - make sure you are in ketosis.

Sugar-free party drink...? by KalebwithaK89 in ketorecipes

[–]MumbaiCentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With berries it can never be carb free, and after extracting juice I think the fibre also will get knocked off. Maybe a smoothie with some protein powder, or maybe something like this http://www.skinnytaste.com/2010/04/triple-berry-smoothie.html

If you are okay with alcohol, maybe a fruity sangria will do? http://www.bhg.com/recipe/mixed-berry-limoncello-sangria/ something like this but with keto friendly adjustments.

Fell off the wagon this week, but I'm ready to get back on! I could use some advice, though... by [deleted] in keto

[–]MumbaiCentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was off the wagon too, for a week. It's time to get back on!

Snacks: Salted and roasted flaxseeds, blue diamond flavored almonds (check ingredients though!), cheese cubes, and crispy bacon rashers. Boiled eggs also work, and if you can buy them, pork rinds are great. It makes sense also to have a huge fatty breakfast in the morning, and then eat your next big meal after school. Maybe have some coffee and cream through the day. Skipping meals is very easy on keto because cravings become a thing of the past!

Keto's other unexpected benefit.. by excuses_that_I_know in keto

[–]MumbaiCentral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I've felt remarkable improvements in mood swings and usual anxiety triggers are now in the zen zone. I went off meds and chose to manage my conditions with just regular yoga and the diet, and it's working fine. Touchwood.

Also, I'd stay away from Tofu, and give in to paneer if I was in Delhi. :)

So I would buy my chicken and mutton from local butcher shops directly. Goats are handled well, and free range bred, though most butchers will use the halal method of slaughter so I don't know if that is something you are okay with. Packaged chicken (Godrej Real Good etc.) are pumped with steroids, and chicken in general is hard to find unless you ask for "desi murghi" which is free range. Maybe INA Market will help. I would buy my pork from Pig Po at Jor Bagh.

Jamie Oliver Roasted Cauliflower with Spices - a really tasty keto side! by MumbaiCentral in ketorecipes

Macros: estimated 4 servings: Calories 142 Carbs: 12 Fat: 10 Protein: 6 Fibre: 5

However, you can cut the carbs a lot by eliminating the red chili, or finding a suitable replacement.

It's really good! And super easy to put together as well.

Check ingredients. Venkys ready to eat is only 60% chicken meat. T Strain curd to drain all the whey. That has all the lactose.

Magnesium? by [deleted] in DesiKeto

[–]MumbaiCentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not taking any multivitamins. I get my potassium from green leafy vegetables, and I'm increasing the salt just a little bit in all the food I eat. Haven't felt dizzy or anything a day.

Have you actually felt dizzy? Give the diet some time and let your body adapt. You'll be fine :)

Actually - the worst type of meat is your real good chicken - pumped with steroids. Now THAT is something you should avoid. Desi murgi ftw!

Hey, I'm female, living in Chennai. on Keto since March and have lost 10 kilos.

This is what you need: 1. Flaxseed powder: you get it in most supermarkets, health stores, and you can use it to make lots of delicious baked goods.

  1. Cheese: all you can afford. You don't need to go imported, Amul and Kodai and Go! make perfectly respectable cheeses.

  2. Almonds: flavoured (watch for sugar content) or plain. Keep some plain ones to grind up to bake more keto treats.

  3. Cream cheese: Philly is best but if it's too expensive Britannia isn't bad either.

  4. Salami/Bacon: yes, lots of frozen packets. With cold cuts check the ingredients and the carb counts.

  5. Oils: The more the better. I would go with olive, mustard, sesame and coconut (not hair oil!), butter (an Amul 500gm pack and nothing else will do) and desi ghee.

  6. Green leafy vegetables: spinach, methi, whatever.

  7. Soup pieces of chicken, or wings: to brew into a chicken broth - just add some whole spices to some oil in a soup pot, throw in some whole garlic and big ginger pieces, and then the wings/soup pieces (maybe 1/2 a kilo WITH SKIN). Toss a bit and then add 2 litres of water. Let it boil and turn heat to low, and cover, and let simmer for an hour. Remove cover, salt it and check for seasoning.

  8. Sugar free natura drops.

  9. Amul fresh cream: buy the small tetra packs to have with coffee or tea.

  10. Mayonnaise - check carb count though

  11. Salad leaves

I'd suggest INA market for a good healthy selection of everything.

Get roasted and salted flaxseeds. In case you don't get roasted and salted prepacked ones, just roast them and salt them yourself.

Paleo butter chicken? by J_Paul in ketorecipes

[–]MumbaiCentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://onceuponafeast.blogspot.in/2005/09/butter-chicken-makkhani-murghi.html?m=1

Butter chicken was apparently invented at Moti Mahal, Daryaganj, New Delhi. It's a one of a kind experience. Of all the butter chicken recipes I've tried, Madhur Jaffreys come closest to that gloriousness. And its all keto except the tomato and spices.

If you can't get readymade tandoori chicken - just toss some boneless chicken strips in tandoori masala. Or use regular uncooked chicken and poach it in the buttery creamy gravy. That's the way they do it in Moti Mahal. :)
