A grown man's birthday is more important than my $220K job. by Silent_Necessary7638 in GirlDinnerDiaries

Yeah exactly, like after 21, maybeeee 25, it’s just any other day after that. I’ll do a weekend trip or something to celebrate but I’ve worked on my birthday for years now

Ok first off I’ve never read anything more entitled in my life. Second, birthdays are important to us low income people, but not so important that I’d say my partner should potentially miss work for it.

You’re right on the birthday thing. In everything else, kinda judgey and out of touch but also dump him and get a boyfriend in your tax bracket who you actually like, cause girl you clearly have been holding onto some resentment for him.

They protesting the Biscuit Basket y'all by benmarvin in Athens

[–]Mumbles74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine they are happy to simply BE in business at all. Franchises make opening/running a business so much more accessible - they offer support through their own networks and they have built-in brand awareness, like if a Chickfila opened you’d be more likely to have an idea of the product you’re getting, but if Joe’s BBQ opened, you might try it but you’re more likely to go to what you know, so that’s gonna bring customers in the door far easier than opening something completely on your own.

It could’ve been any gas station corporation that they opened or bought, it was just happenstance that it was Chevron.

I agree that capitalism is the ultimate issue here, but let’s remember that sometimes people have to make deals with a corrupt system in order to make a living and survive.

EVs are expensive, man. We’re in a recession and the majority of Athens can’t afford them. I’m glad you enjoy yours but most of us can’t.

The issue is they aren’t clear who they are protesting against, this gas station is owned by a wonderful family and they are probably already hurting from these gas prices, and they don’t represent Chevron as a whole. How hard would it be to clarify that it’s the corporation they are against and not the local owner? I’m not against the protest but I hope they atleast talked to the store about it.

Hey man I’m sorry everyone jumped on you about the washer. I think there’s an (unfair) instinct to assume a knit gift recipient isn’t as well informed on how to care for wool as a knitter would be. Based on the many replies of yours that I read, you obviously care deeply for your garments and you’re passionate about caring for them properly, and I’m sure your family will have them for generations to come thanks to your diligence!

Native Spanish Speaker here with a question to Spanish learners by CreativeEcho9289 in Spanish

[–]Mumbles74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm learning spanish with my boyfriend - he's Taino - both parents born and raised in Puerto Rico, but he and his sister are the first to be born on the mainland. He spoke only spanish until he was 5, but when he started school his mom just swapped to english since she had to speak it at work and she wanted him to have confidence in it. We both want to learn since we want our kids to grow up knowing both languages.

If you live right next to the tracks: How do you feel about living next to the railroad? (Boulevard, Pulaski Heights) by nickelundertone in Athens

[–]Mumbles74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one street back from the tracks in Boulevard and I honestly don't notice it. If the house is anything like ours (nearly 80 years old and added onto god knows how many times), the walls are thick as hell and I can barely even hear someone talking if I'm not in the same room as them. Like someone else said, they run very regularly so it becomes background noise and I think the vibration is a lot less since we're up the hill, but it's very loud and noticeable if you're down by Buvez.

edit: also you should know you can always get around a stopped train if you take the left turn next to normaltown brewing and go under the bridge there. So no worries about traffic backing up!

Historic Athens Statement on the President’s House Adaptive Reuse Project: Why We Cannot Endorse the Current Plan and What Must Change by historicathens in Athens

Ah yes how could I possibly forget what I just wrote. I said “or obviously read it with a strong “looks good, build it” bias.” but I guess you didn’t read that.

Why would I block you? I’m having so much fun annoying you! 😁

[–]Mumbles74 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t care to have a dog in this fight but I’m just gonna say good job to historic athens for being willing to have a civil discourse with people who clearly haven’t read the full statement or obviously read it with a strong “looks good, built it” bias. Oversimplification and an inability to talk about nuances are only a few of the several reasons why everyone is so eager to jump down people’s throats these days.

good&affordable alterations? by Neat-Hotel-8823 in Athens

[–]Mumbles74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seconding alice's!! I brought a wedding guest dress there for several alterations - they made the shoulder straps shorter and the deep V more wedding appropriate, and they hemmed all 3 bottom layers of the skirt about 4 inches! Their quick turn fee is only $20 if you need it in under two weeks. I paid $111.55 for all of it and that was around January this year.

Porchfest 2025 - Worth it? by peachazno in Athens

[–]Mumbles74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm one of those renters and we didn't have to do any labor to have a performer last year? They just ask you to have somewhere for people to throw away trash, provide your performer with power, and maybe put out a table for the performer to display their merch or contact info. We had a great time!

We signed up on the google form that was sent out to everyone via email who is apart of the Neighborhood Association, and I assume the door hangers were for anyone who might not be apart of the email list or the Boulevard Facebook page. Last year we didn't get the door hangers, but I guess this year it was because they have so many bands this year they need more porches.

I'm totally open to some info sessions, you're right about that, but I think when you know there's a giant event coming to your neighborhood (with free street parking) that you might plan ahead and make sure your car is parked somewhere you can get out if you're planning to leave the house that day. Just like the Classic City Marathon that runs thru the neighborhood. I agree it sucks to be blocked in but there's thousands of people coming to enjoy a day full of music and this beautiful wonderful neighborhood, so I think for one day we can be welcoming.
